Musselman Triathlon

Sunny
Total Time = 5h 44m 29s
Overall Rank = 257/794
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 32/87
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast was Kashi Go Lean Crisp. Small coffee. Set up transition, used the facilities, then just relaxed until the race started.
Event warmup:

Windmills and stretching of my arms, shoulders, and core.
Swim
  • 35m 9s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Sub-par swim for me. I was glad that I opted for my tinted goggles, because the sun was in our eyes when heading for the canal. I had trouble picking up the buoys. I still swam straight, but I had to sight more than the occasional quick glance to make sure I was still on course. Also, I haven't been swimming enough lately, so I did not push the pace to what I normally would for this distance.

I caught up with the 3rd wave around the first buoy, the second wave around the turn toward the canal, and straglers from wave 1 in the canal.
What would you do differently?:

Try to find more time in my schedule to get the workouts in.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

20/87 in AG
205/794 overall
Large transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 2h 56m 59s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.98 mile/hr
Comments:

For a single loop course with only 900 racers, the amount of drafting going on was ridiculous. Twice I was passed by what could only be called a peloton. The only good thing about it was that I did see the officials come up on them one time, so I think they got the penalties they earned.

Overall, a very good ride for me. My pacing was perfect. I beat my goal split time by 15 minutes while resisting the urge to chase people when they passed me. I held a steady effort thoughout the ride, whether I was on the flat, riding up a grade, or down.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe could have pushed a little harder, but it may have impacted the run too much.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Good transition.
14/87 in AG and 70/794 overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 08m 37s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a fantastic run for me! Even though the course was much hillier than Morgantown last year, my run split was nearly 20 minutes faster!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around. I didn't sit down until more than an hour after I finished.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness.

Event comments:

This race is amazing! The amount of goodies handed out was just nuts! It was incredibly organized with well-thought-out activities. The post-race food was delicious! Watermelon, good pizza, ice cream, fresh local fruits, etc. Even the finishers' medals were cool - recycled cogs polished up and placed on lanyards so every one is unique. If you have the opportunity to do this race, do it!!!

Course: Single loop mostly flat on smooth roads. One area was very rough. I was surprised how flat the course was. I had heard that it had some hills, and looking at the profile, it seemed to, but I'd definitely call this a flat course. There was really only one hill around mile 30, and it wasn't hard. I was in the aero bars all but the few minutes it took to climb the one hill, bottle exchange, and to stretch occasionally. This is definitely a fast course.

Nice job out there.  Yes there were a lot of mini peltons going on.  Nice job on run.   That course is going to kill me for sure.
