Pre-race routine:

Got up around 4:45 and showered. Had a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee. Got the bikes on the car and the rest of the gear in the car and left for the race around 5:50. Got to the registation building around 7:00 and picked up race packet and schwag bag. Headed over to the race site, parked and took the bikes to body marking and then to transition. Got everything set up, talked to some people that I knew and then walked back to the car to get the wetsuits. Carried them back went over to the swim start area for pre race meeting.
Event warmup:

Just walking back and forth between the car and transition. Was a pretty long walk!
Swim
  • 12m 55s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was in the first wave. Got going pretty well. Pulled up twice during the swim to avoid getting kicked. Passed several people. After the first buoy, don't think I got passed by anyone. Sighting and swimming straight was better than usual but the canal was narrow enough that I could see the side of the canal the whole way. Also, buoys were on the left which is the way I breath which made it easier. Legs were HOT by the end of the swim in the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Time was a lot faster than I had hoped for but it still was only MOP. I feel pretty good about this part of the race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Got the wetsuit down around my waist while running in. Was using my road id noprene strap for my timing chip and at first I had my thumb in there trying to pull the suit off. Realized that, got the suit off and move on. Made the decision before the race to go sockless on the bike and stuck with that.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more getting out of the wetsuit.
Bike
  • 50m 48s

Comments:

For the most part, felt pretty good. Passed back and forth with a few folks in the beginning of the ride. After a while I started getting passed by a lot of the fast folks from the next wave or two. Hills again were my downfall...off season opportunity. Had the wind at our backs on the way out and then in our face on the way back. Had an orange vanilla GU Rocktane at mile 11 and water through out the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Get better at hills!
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Tried to make this transition super speedy. Started putting socks on. Could tell it was not going to go on easy so made a game time decision to go without. Sneakers on, grabbed race belt and went. A very big THANK YOU to the volunteer who was standing at the exit to transition and told me that I still had my helmet on!!! Took it off and dropped it at the end of the nearest rack. Like I said, I tried to make this a super speedy transition.
What would you do differently?:

Take my helmet off! Plan for no socks on the run from the beginning.
Run
  • 26m 24s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Don't really know what happened here. Legs just did not have any giddy up. I knew my pace was slow but couldn't get going any faster. This was the disappointing part of the race. Last year's sprint I ran a 7:45 pace on a similiar run course. This was a lot slower than expected.
What would you do differently?:

Probably need some more intensity on my runs during training. Possibly more bricks??? Gotta figure that out.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water and snacks and waited for my wife to finish. She finished in 1:45:02. After that waited form someother friends we know to finish, chatted with some folks and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills and the run! Possibly the 8.5 extra pounds I have on me now vs. last year!!

Event comments:

Great local race with big turnouts. This is part of a tri weekend with the sprint on Saturday and a half iron distance and kids race on Sunday. Good schwag bag. It didn't impact me being in the first swim wave but I heard that other waves were too big and not everyone had enough time to swim out to the buoys before their swim wave started. Kids tri on Sunday was fun but needs just a bit more organization. Overall a great race...I hope to do the half next year.

Nice job George...great swim time, hard to believe that was MOP.  Next time drop the helmet before the finish line, huh?

PS Come to WI if you want to hit some hills!

1.34 hundred's on the swim and that is middle of the pack?  Insane!  Great race, and good speeds.  Bike seems strange sharing the 1st 2 and last 2 miles!!
