Overall Rank = 387/3450
Age Group = F35-39
Age Group Rank = 94/572
Pre-race routine:

Got up early - a little after 4am - got everything together to check out of the hotel. Grabbed a bagel and cream cheese from the complimentary hotel breakfast. Ran late - didn't get into transition until about 10-15 minutes before it closed up... made some mistakes setting up my stuff that would return to haunt me a little later.
Event warmup:

After being kicked out of transition, had over an hour to wait before my wave started. Stood around with Kim and Marcie, chatting. That was about all the warmup I did. Oh, had a gel about 20 minutes beforehand. THAT'S about it.
Swim
  • 17m 15s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Goal of this swim: not to panic one bit. Woohoo! Goal achieved! Purposely started out VERY slowly, making certain that it was almost impossible to get my heart rate up too much. I think that did the trick. From there on out, it was just a matter of getting to the other side (which, like an optical illusion, always appeared the same distance away no matter how far I swam!).
What would you do differently?:

GOTTA LEARN HOW TO SIGHT BETTER. I'm sure I swam a couple extra hundred meters out there, zig-zagging across what was a straight course. Other than that, need to also figure out how to both start slowly, but also keep up with my wave - it would help navigation to have other people around me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

What a mess. It was a total Barnum & Bailey moment there in T1. First, my body glide was stuck in my biking shoe. Then, my race number was under my shoes (instead of on top of it) and I forgot to put it on (went back for it since my gel was attached to it). Tried to put on the race belt while holding bike -- bike took a spill. Finally, at the mount line, almost fell over getting on my bike because my shoe caught on my cross bar.
What would you do differently?:

Just about everything. :)
Bike
  • 38m 11s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 19.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Never really felt good on the bike. Started out tired and ended up tired. Didn't drink enough. Felt like everytime I started getting a good pace going, a hill would come up and I just couldn't seem to keep things smooth and just roll through it. The whole ride felt really choppy to me and I never got in a good rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more. Other than that... I think it's just a matter of more practice on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

This transition was fine, unlike the first one. :) Nothing too eventful.
What would you do differently?:

Forgot to turn on my SDM pod, so I didn't know my pace during the run.
Run
  • 26m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt slow coming out of T1 - my calves were really tight - but as I approached the first mile, found that I ran it in 8:06 (which is a good time for me). From there on out, I knew I'd come in under 1:30, so I walked through the next two water stops. Around 1.5 miles, I felt like I was getting my legs under me and started feeling decent.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to turn my foot pod on. Perhaps if I had slowed down a little the first mile, I would have been able to turn in better times in the next two miles. But - overall, happy with this run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, watched all my other friends cross the finish line, 4 of them completing their first ever tri!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Like all my other race reports - better swimming skills. Also - more time to set up my transition area *might* have helped (can't really blame it on being rushed, though - I double-checked everything and just didn't catch a couple of things).

Event comments:

Great atmosphere and the all-women vibe is very "you go, girl!" encouraging. Course was good, well-staffed and clearly marked. On the flip side - packet pickup was not very well organized, and remote parking was a joke -- took almost 30 minutes to go about 2 miles to even get to the parking lot. They had enough shuttle buses this year, just not enough access to the parking. Also - post-race - one piece of fruit. That's it (unless there was stuff I didn't see). How is it possible that that's all there was??

Great race Laura! You said you didn't feel good on the bike? You averaged almost 20mph! Excellent swim and your run, well let's just say I'd like to have that run time.

PS: All I got was a bottle of water and a bottle of Propel.

That's a really nice race you put together.  As far as the transition, we all have these moments of complete disorganization, where you're staring at your stuff and thinking, "What the #$&@ goes on next?"

So, it won't happen again for a while, right?

How has this been out here, and I haven't commented yet?

Great race, your run as usual was awesome.  Maybe I should have gotten up on Saturday and run with you, maybe it would have helped me like it helped you.  Oh wait, you can't cram for this stuff like school.  Very impressed with your swim, that is huge to get over the panic and a 10 minute improvement is great!  No noodles for you!      You were cool as a cucumber Sunday morning, an improvement in one month!  (you seemed much more nervous at Reebok).

Looking forward to Waukegan, should be a fun one!

How could I forget.............

YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!
