gearboy - 2010-07-14 9:24 AM We've always been a "lid down" family for just this reason.  But I have a similar observation about the dogs and water.  For ages, we kept a single (red) dog bowl in the kitchen for water for the animals.  Last summer, I got tired of constantly refilling the bowl 4-5 times a day, and wised up by adding a second (blue but otherwise identical) bowl.  The dogs will preferrentially drink from the red bowl, to the point that they make sad little slurping sounds to get the last drops from the sides, while the perfectly good, identical water sits untouched in the blue bowl 6 inches away.

I think once they get into a habit of getting water from their favored spot, that becomes their "go-to" for the water.  Kind of like how I have a favorite coffee mug.  There are other mugs in the cabinet, but that is always my "go-to" for a cup of joe.

Do you make sad slurping sounds when your mug is almost empty?

OINK!

Oh wait sorry wrong thread.

Yanti!

Wait... are you the piglet now?

I am prime piglette.

What was that you said about coffee, and slurping sounds???

You did make me laugh out loud, and you have heard my laugh, so that is quite something.

My parents lab/german shepard mix, named Patch, never drank out of the toilet until he got older. He had a hard time walking up and down the steps to the water bowl, and found it more convenient to walk into the bathroom and drink out of the toilet.

The advantage of opposable thumbs is being able to make a whole new cup of coffee.  I don't have to carry the empty bowl around in my mouth and drop it in the middle of the living room so people will know to give me more.

Dude. Don't blow my game. I'm much happier having other people make coffee for me because they think I'm an idiot

Sadly for me, I am the only coffee drinker in the house.  So if I relied on others, I would either only get tea, or some pathetic imitation of coffee (overboiled water, too few or too many beans, whatever).  Now if I could only train the dogs to make me my java, I'd be a happy man.  (I figure they are more likely to want to please me than anyone else in the house).
