Pre-race routine:

This was a total last minute decision. I signed up like 12 hours before the race start :) Its all good. I didnt' find out about it til thursday from Jeff and Renee and then I was waiting to hear from my coach. Anyway................ate a bagel with PB on the way over. The requisite 3 diet cokes. I got their early as I didn't exactly know how long it would take me to get there. Jeff and I sat under a tree for a while. Its REALLY easy to go to a swimming race. Got goggles and a towel? OK you are READY.

WATER temp was 87 degrees.....geez o pete

Comments:

Well this is my first swimming race. Well I did a beach race when I was like 10 once but really my first swim race. I was in the open division so it was pretty much everyone except people who are registered with USA Swimming masters program. That would not be me. All ages shapes and sizes.

We started in what was for me about shoulder deep water and we took off. I really started quite poorly but I did do some good drafting for a while then as always the fast people took off and I was swimming on my own. It was quite seaweedy and at a couple points I had to breast stroke thru it. I was keep a good rhythm. I do loose focus in a long swim which a realized about 3/4s of the way thru the first leg. I started passing some others and made the turns to go back and had caught a bunch of people who no doubt started out too fast. My left hand had gone completely numb which hampered me a bit but I tried not to slow down. I was trying to pick up the tempo and pace the last leg and continued to catch people. I could see a clump a 100 yards or so in front of me. The last 2 buoys I really tried to swim as hard as I could.

The finish was between 2 cones on the sand and I passed a few more people the last little bit. I ran the the finish then started walking. After you went thru the finish you walked and got a piece of paper that said what place you came in and some stupid guy sprints by me and grabs a paper right as I had my hand out to take mine, no doubt thinking he could gain a place by out sprinting me.................after the I had already crossed the finish line in front of him...................BUT the guy handing out the papers was ON to him and said "You finished in front of him" and gave me #32 and him #33. Stupid freaking runner idiot. Its a SWIMMING RACE not a RUNNING RACE. Thank God. HEH

SECOND IN AGE GROUP :) YAY me
What would you do differently?:

Position better at the start, not daydream in the middle of the swim and hold a more consistent pace. No idea on the numb hand although my neck is REALLY unhappy now
Post race
Warm down:

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm none.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My left hand went completely NUMB about 1/2 way thru. Not sure why. I was having trouble pulling with it. I needed to hold a more consistent pace thru the middle section of the race.

Event comments:

It was a nice little race. This was the third in the series of three but I had conflicts the other 2. Nice t-shirt and water and fruit after the race. There were about 90 people there

Great job!! Sorry the water was not refreshing. As for the hand, you know you are not allowed to race without some sort of absurd drama, so I guess that would be the extent of it

Awesome Sue!

It's fun to see you take your fitness, do something a bit different and excel at it.

Very cool that the timer guy was on to the guy trying to cheat.

Congrats on Hardware!
