Pre-race routine:

Got up and six, had some breakfast, then packed up and drove the bike the 1 mile over to the race. I love having a race I can ride my bike to.
Event warmup:

Just did a short swim.
Swim
  • 19m 1s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

I debated about wearing the wetsuit but knew I wouldn't be competing for an age group award so I thought I was just wear it. The swim went fine until I turned to head back towards the beach. My goggles were fogged and I couldn't see anything. I managed ok for a while but ended up going way off course til a volunteer yelled at me and told me where to go. I know this cost me some time.
What would you do differently?:

I need to find goggles that I can look into the sun and still see. This is the second race in 2 years where I have had this problem.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

Nothing special here though my last race this was under 2 minutes.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 37s
  • 18 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I really wanted to push the bike but kind of feel like this was an average effort for me. I think the heat and wind played into that. One thing is that I brought my aero bottle with powerade and it wasn't nearly enough to drink.
What would you do differently?:

I need to bring more fluids on the bike when it is this hot out.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Nothing special here.
Run
  • 56m 40s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 12m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

What can I say here, I totally blew up on the run. I don't think I drank enough on the bike and with heat I just didn't have anything left in the tank for this run. I did my best but ended up walking most of the uphills and aid stations trying to stay cool.
What would you do differently?:

Train in the heat more often
Post race
Warm down:

Just got some water and food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and humidity was a big factor. Also my issues sighting on the last part of the swim cost me some time too. That and I have been too busy to put a lot of time into training this year.

Event comments:

This race is like 1 mile from my house on the same lake I live on. This is my third year doing the race and I love it. However, I am starting to get annoyed at the amount of vehicle traffic on the bike route when I know there are other routes they could take that would be much less busy.

Yea, the heat/humidity can knock the mojo out of a race, you persevered and finished. Way to go !!

Nice job Craig.  If I was racing, I would have looked for you.  However, a knee problem has seriously limited (read:  none) my training this season and I've written it off.  I was hoping to be healed by Reeds Lake, but no dice.

Again, congrats on completing it.  I remember how warm it was last year, and I heard it was worse this year.
