Age Group Rank = 6/18
Pre-race routine:

Woke up a few minutes late. Grabbed a bagel, banana, and Carnation instant breakfast going out the door. Was having stomach/upper digestive problems from when I left to when the race started - turned into lower digestive as I was setting up my transition.
Event warmup:

Swam for a few minutes. Practiced entering/exiting twice to make sure everything felt right.
Swim
  • 09m 5s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pacing was okay, but was limited by my breathing. I was scared that if I went out too fast I could suffer from stomach problems later in the race. It was a smart choice considering the circumstances, but I regretted it later.
What would you do differently?:

Trust my breathing technique. I have a very efficient technique that works well, even when I'm at 90% of my speed capacity; a 400 is WAY too short not to sprint.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Great transition to bike. Could have run a little faster out of the water and up the beach. Could have also done a little better mounting my bike, but it didn't affect my speed (just looked funky).
Bike
  • 26m 1s
  • 9.32 miles
  • 21.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I was shooting for a 20+mph bike avg so I knew I'd have to keep my speed up. Mentally, I was prepared VERY well for this portion. My cornering was VERY slow for the wider turns, but I was taking no chances this race in the corners (especially after my BAD crash at Buster Britton). Tried not to draft much at all when coming up behind & passing - nothing illegal.
What would you do differently?:

Push even harder, especially into the wind.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Had to help out a lady with her bike - deducted the time (2 min) from overall bike split accordingly (because of how they had it setup, my bike-run transition time was included on the bike time)
What would you do differently?:

I need to find a better way to either run without socks or put them on faster - it felt like I spend too much time on my socks.
Run
  • 25m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

I started fast (adrenaline rush) and made myself slow down & had a hard time picking pace back up - some calf tightness, but nothing to worry about. Had a mini-cramp at 1.2mi but was able to breathe it off without dropping my cadence.
What would you do differently?:

Start off SLOW exiting transition - pick my legs up more to force a longer stride, cadence was fine.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around finish and then back to transition to pick up my stuff.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental effort, especially on the swim and run.

Event comments:

Great race for beginners - easy course. Nice and fast. Packet pickup and marking was a little too spread out. Didn't start on time. Only gatorade and water offered after - it is benefiting a non-profit though so its no problem.
