Overcast
Total Time = 1h 23m 52s
Overall Rank = 95/207
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 12/18
Pre-race routine:

Wake up, grab a PBJ, double check that everything is in the car, and off we go! Set up transition, check in, Text Tony, and soak in the atmosphere.
Event warmup:

Swam about 100 yds before the pre-race meeting to get the arms loosened up.
Swim
  • 08m 23s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty good swim. Didn't try and blow it up, didn't really sit back and cruise either. Really crowded first 100 yds, trying to find clean water.

I got caught in between a couple guys who were slower than me on the last 1/3 of the swim that I couldn't seem to get around. I think that slowed me a bit as I was looking to turn it up a bit in the last 100 yds or so.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. This felt about right for my training level lately.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Includes run from shore to T1. Went shoes off the bike coming out of T1, felt more stable that way, and I haven't practiced the flying mount enough to try it in a race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, really.
Bike
  • 37m 45s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.07 mile/hr
Comments:

First time racing in aero, and I like it. I felt I was a couple mph faster in spots than I would have been otherwise. I could REALLY feel it on the descents, as i hit 42mph at one point. One of the volunteers was counting place at the last turn, I was top 25 at that point and I passed 2 people in the last couple miles. That would soon change...
What would you do differently?:

Train a bit more. My bike training has been mostly flat the last couple weeks, trying not to burn out. i did well spinning a little higher cadence instead of trying to low-cadence power my way up the hills.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Fast T2. Out of the shoes about 1/4 out, slipped a little (sweaty feet) at the dismount line. Racked the bike, sip of water, shoes on and tied. Good T2.
What would you do differently?:

Put the elastic laces that I have in the shoes...
Run
  • 33m 33s
  • 3.4 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

About a mile into the run I feel it: my shoes are rubbing my toes the WRONG way. Crap. I keep at it until it hurts, then walk until it doesn't. Rinse, repeat...

This part sucks, because my legs/lungs actually felt surprisingly good (considering my recent training levels) at this point. I think the blisters cost me a good 5-7 minutes on the run, because I was walking a LOT. Ugh. My last pair of these shoes were fine running sockless. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my sockless feet and shoes are compatible before race day. My sweat rate may have contributed a bit to that as well, my shoes weighed about 2 lbs each after the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Kiss from Mrs. bcart. Lotsa water, banana, apple at the refreshment station near the finish line. Watched the rest of the racers finish, but didn't stay for the awards ceremony.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Blistered feet and a slight lack of recent run training.

Event comments:

The only thing this race needs to be great is timing chips. They're still going on just overall time. Great atmosphere, great people, great course.
