Door County, Wisconsin
United States
72F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 5h 47m 59s
Overall Rank = 92/265
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 203/49
Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel, nectarine, and a gogurt.
Event warmup:

Few strokes in the water - mostly just to get wet.
Swim
  • 32m 3s
  • 2000 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great swim! I passed a lot of people. They started the elites and relays, then the AG men, then AG women. I was in wave 15/18. I passed a lot of men even!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing! I never see anyone that I can draft off of, so I don't know that I could swim it any better. I do have some chafing on my neck from the wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Wetsuit strippers!! That was so nice! I think I did well even though my time was 21/49 in AG. I didn't want to rush and forget something.
What would you do differently?:

?
Bike
  • 3h 09m 20s
  • 56.3 miles
  • 17.84 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt AWESOME on the bike! I didn't think I could keep the pace up - I was extremely happy with this. I wanted to be around 3:30 realistically. I took the corners a little easier once it was actually raining.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think I could have done it any differently. Obviously by my age group rank, everyone else had a good bike too!
Transition 2
  • 03m 59s
Comments:

I am glad I decided ahead of time to change shirts because I was wet from the rain. Also, I did decide to go to the bathroom. I won't comment further for the men that might read this, but....
What would you do differently?:

Change my body's decisions! Overall a good transition.
Run
  • 2h 00m 32s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

I could immediately feel my right foot start to flare. I was able to ignore it until I was done. I also realized by halfway that I was having underarm chafing from being so wet. Not much I could do, but boy does it hurt today! I really wanted to walk the hills, but boy that mile 9.5 hill was HUGE! I had to do what my legs wanted at that point. I couldn't eat after 5 miles, but I did drink gatorade starting at 10, and that was okay.
What would you do differently?:

I wanted to keep my average at 9/mile or lower, but I just couldn't. I kept thinking about the coke at the end - which they were out of! I also couldn't wait to take off my shoes. I don't know that I could have done this any better. I think since I ran everything but part of the big hill and the water stations - I did good. I wanted my run under 2 and since I was at 2 -- I think I have nothing to complain about.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around - went in the lake - ate some food - drank FRESCA instead of COKE :(

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. I think it was the best performance I could have hoped for. Optimal conditions (besides the rain and some wind).

Event comments:

I still have to give the post race a good even thought they ran out of coke! I had so much fun! It was so hard and took a lot of mental energy!! I don't think I could have done better and I think I'll have to pull a George Costanza and hang up my 1/2 Iron shoes with that. Really wanted to be under 6 -- met all of my goals. I'm good!

Oops - just realized I said I really wanted to "walk the hills"  -- meant I wanted to RUN the hills!

Great job Wendy.  Walk away while on top and stick to the shorter stuff. Smile
