Pre-race routine:

Drove down to Racine Sat afternoon. Met Kelli at the expo then went to bike check andas I was takingmy bike off I realized one of my areobarpads flew off on the way down..ugh. This just happened when I went to Capital view with the other side! I had new ones ordered too. Sigh... my luck! So I go over to bike support and they say they dont have anyone there til tommorrow. They send me to this new bike Shop on third street I think it was called 3rd Coast Bikes the owners name is Don. He hooked me up nice!! He was super super great. he didnt have that much in stock cuz they are pretty new so he took a pad off a brand new bike and let me use it! I did return it Sunday :) I will totally pimp him and his shop anytime. So thanks Don!!
Finally my girl Tracy shows up- she came down to be my sherpa :)!! We went to the BT dinner. Was great seeeing somef you and meeting some others.
I idnt really feel the best after dinner either....
Event warmup:

Get to the race site- pump my tires. Speaking of tires.... last time I did Racine I had 2 flats, my last 70.3 I had a flat, this time I didnt even briung anything to change one cuz there was no way in hell it could happen again!! Ha- it didnt:) Was probaly flirting with the tri gods there but whatever...
Did a little preswim and it was cold. I like swimming in cool water once I get going, the getting going is the hard part for me!
We managed to fanaggle Tracy a swim cap so she could do the swim with us. the girl is slightly cracked and loves to swim:)
Hung out with Tracy, Kelli, and Birkie, also managed to shmooze some sharkies out of this nice guy!

Comments:

Meh.... every time I have done racine I kind of freak and cant put my face in the water. Same thing this time. I just kind of floated there for a while and talked myself into it. I have no idea why I do this... mental. By the time I got to the turn bouy I was fine. This probaly cost me a minute or two...damn. then I had to pass (yes I do pass a few people:))the people who do swim slower then me... oh well. Sighting was OK, once we got about halfway it seems like the waves picked up and that there was alittle pull away from the bouy line... but I may just be cracked:)
Stood up and my watch said 40 minutes...about what I expected. Started walking towards shore and Tracy is standing there yelling " nice swim girl! Dont worry you arent THAT far behind!!" LMAO...gee thanks! For some reason this cracked me up all day.
What would you do differently?:

dont be a wuss!!
Swim more- I havent been swimming much (thats an understatement) and when I do swim its not long.
So really cant expect much better.
If I really want to be closer to the top and I need to work on my swim.
Transition 1

Comments:

long run thru the sand. I dropped my goggles and didnt realize it and someone yelled- I turned around and some guy had grabbed them off teh ground, he wasnt moving forward to fast so I ran back to get them from him and started running back to T1.
Suit came off well, grabbed the bike and was off. Mount wasnt the best either.
What would you do differently?:

not drop the goggels.
Bike
  • 2h 40m 41s

Comments:

mmm....well I didnt have a garmin I did have my PT. Was planning onpushing 180-190 watts. However I kind of was feeling like this was where I needed to be... felt like I had enough speed and would be able to run after. Pretty uneventful. Was passed by no girls, but I was in the last wave of girls and had a slow swim!
Had this guy behind me who I guess was totally sucking my wheel. This girls rides up behind me and tells me this. She yelled at him- LOL! Youd think a 38 year old guy could at least draft off a fricken guy not a 140 pound girl...yesh- what an ass.
So I was going thru this aid station tryingt o get a bottle of water, I have my arm outreached to grab it and this dude rides right under my arm between me and the volunteer...WTF?? Are you kidding me? So anyways I didnt get the wtare I wanted but managed a sports drink down a bit farther.
Then Ben S comes up behind me, says hey Tammy. I say are you seriously passing me on the bike???!! He says- yep. I tried to ride with him for a while, we talked about our sucky swims, then I decided I wasnt gonna push 220 watts to stay with him.. I say see you on the run! ( id ont think he will pass me next time;))
Hit a pretty big headwind on the way in...totally pushed my mph down :( Was kind of out of gas by this time too... I didnt have too many rides over 50 miles in.
Drank 2+ bottles of the IM drink, 2 bottles of water and a Lara bar gotta be 7-800 cal...was super thirsty though could have used one more bottle of water.
What would you do differently?:

I should have tried to push harder- I should have been able to. My ave watts was only 166.
Overall fairly happy with this- it is my highest mph in a HIM
Transition 2
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Well as soon as I dismounted the bike it started to pour then hail...lol- I couldnt have gotten off at a better time. I really had to pee so it was uper easy to just pee while I was standing in T2.. I mean the rain quickly washed it away..nice:)
That cost me a few seconds but grabbed my stuff and was off.
What would you do differently?:

nada- not sure why this was so long.
Run
  • 1h 52m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Totally had my run legs right away. I forgot my garmin at home so I just went old school. Had no idea of pace but I felt comfy and was pretty sure I could run 13.1 at that pace. Sort of felt at times like I should be hurting more but I havent had many long runs in (mostly 10s) so didnt want to die! Grabbed something at every aid station, usually 2 things. Slowed down enough to make sure I got fluid in.
Wasnt gonna do any gels, my stomach has not been likeing them in the heat.
Did I mention it was HOT!!... I think someone said the heat index was 100. Damn.
Had one glass of gatorade, 2 cokes, 3 oarnge slices. that was probaly maybe only 200 calories- probaly should have hadmore- but I just didnt want my tummy to rebel.
Felt really pretty good til mile 9 or ten then my legs strted to tighten upa bit- could have used some endurolytes, didnt bring any, course didnt have any, oh well.
Just sucked it up and tried to hold my pace.
Loved seeing everyone out there!!
Finished strong, felt like hell. Tracy was waiting for me and I made her come down to the lake with me- that felt great!

What would you do differently?:

nothing...maybe could have run harder
Happy with this though- I predicted a 1:50-1:55...so smack on.
Ill take it with the heat.

I actually placed higher in my AG on the run then the bike- that doesnt usually happen.
Post race
Warm down:

walked a bit, sat in the lake, found some food and drink, damn I was thirsty!!
Felt OK- had to keep reminding tracy that I couldnt walk that damn fast!LOL

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HAvent put as much long stuff in as I would have liked.
No excuses really.
Im cool with the way things went.

Good job Tammy.  Seems that leaving your garmin at home has had a good impact on your run.  Congratulations.

Are you really surprised a guy would suck your wheel?  The view baby, the view.  Seriously though, great job out there.  I'd like to do this race someday.

Great race Tammy.  It could have been me that yelled at the guy.  Were you wearing pink?  I ended up getting a red card for drafting in a cluster.  When he gave me the card the pack was way ahead of me.  He said I failed to pass therefore I was drafting.  Oh well.

Great job Tammy, Nice RR, super strong bike and solid run. MNDIVER stole my witty comment! I have done my last two 70.3 runs old school, sometimes it is better to let your body get into that run groove naturally vs. forcing it to with tech.

Great job!  Way to deal with the conditions, too.  That is a super great race and great AG placing considering the field.  I am thinking clearwater next year!

Amazing race Tammy! Especially impressive with those conditions.  Ok so it is mental to be freaked a little by the water, but not mental to pee in t-2? Got it!
