Another desert dweller here...  Last week, I did my bike commute home (26 miles) when it was 113.  I'm thinking the traffic exhaust and the sun-baked asphalt likely made it a little hotter.  I located exactly where the division is between tough/dedicated and not very bright.  I was the latter that day.

I'm limiting my commute days from now on to days when the high is not expected to exceed 110, hydrating more, and going at an easier pace.

I am use to it. I forgot it was hot until I saw this thread. I work outside so I would recommend spending time outside as much as possible. Even if you sit on the porch and read it will acclimate you faster.

Luckily I am mainly biking and swimming these days but am doing a little running.  Summer time in south Louisiana is a lousy time to be a runner.

Cant say Im having quite as bad luck, but its been 85-90 all week with humidity varying.. Its been harsh.

As hard as biking or running is in this weather, nothing compares to walking 18 with a bag of clubs on your back, with clothes nowhere near as breathable as the ones we run in.

Cardholic - 2010-07-21 1:23 AM Here in Vegas, it's been over 90* when I wake up before it's light out... and it's been staying over 100* til after 10pm... hard to get any outside training in... My normal Tuesday night group ride was canceled tonight because of the high temperatures...

How is the heat where you live? How are you dealing with it?

I'm in Iraq.  It got up to 124 degrees F last week.  Most nights the lows are in the 90's...but that almost feels "cool" after the highs.

I pretty much only work out outside between 3am and 7am.  You just can't otherwise.  If I can't work out in that window I find a treadmill or the trainer.  The weather isn't going to get any cooler just because I want it to.  So I suffer through my workouts and figure that my pace will be a lot faster when when I get home.

Same here: just trying to struggle through it.  Plenty to drink and try not to get too down because my times are off.  The fall will be here soon enough.

Extremely hot & HUMID this summer in the Southeast. The heat doesn't get to me nearly as much as the humidity. Did 6.0 mile run after work yesterday at 5:30PM. My pace was 9.0. I wasnt pushing it. Did a 9.0 mile run on Saturday at 8.89 pushing it al little more than yesterday. In cooler temps both of these runs would have been a minute per mile lower. So yes the heat is getting to me!

Running in the heat kicks my a$$. I try to get out there really early or really late and have been using the treadmill. Trying to run right after work outside usually results in me having to walk some and by the time I get home I think I'm having a heat stroke. The biking and swimming isn't an issue.

Yep. Even the pools/lakes are hot here. I'm staying indoors because the recovery from working out in the heat is not worth it. Love the treadmill.

So I guessing that no one wants to hear me complain about mid to upper '80's here in MN.  It was around 90 on Sunday during my HIM race.  That's hot for us in the upper Midwest.  Don't know how you folks in the desert can do it.

It's been 90's to 100 here with high humidity.

I've been getting up around 3:30 so I can get my runs in before the sun comes up. One moring it was 80 and sticky at 4 am. I'm glad I ran then and not when it was 104 later in the day.

Even on the weekends I'll get up early and run, then sometimes go back to bed for a little bit.

It almost got to me at the NYC tri.  I was in one of the last waves to start and had the most intense heat during the run.  I was actually starting to get heat stroke-ish chills and dizzy near the finish line.

I live in the Southeast & actually LOVE the heat & humidity. The hotter the better!! =) I just slow down & pace myself (which is a good thing for me to work on anyway) & drink more. I have a touch of exercise asthma (or so they say) & the cold dry air in the winter makes me feel like I'm having a heart attack ( tight, heavy chest), so this moist humid air makes it 100x easier to breathe. I'm also extraordinarily cold-natured, so I swear it takes longer for my body to heat up than it does most people's. I do understand heat is not good for most, though. I do my runs around noon most days (90+) & have managed to overheat everyone I've ever run with. =(

The heat is killing me.  Actually, its not the head, but the humidity that is torture.

I used to live in Palm Springs, ran all summer in 100+ heat. I was slower, but I could do it. Just went to Vegas in June and ran a couple times and biked while we were there, it was over 100 each time, no real problems (even after a few drinks the night before)

Here in Houston though, with it being 95+ and 97%+ humidity, I get in trouble. When the humidity is that high, you lose the evaporation cooling effect of sweating. My core temp rockets (as in, Sunday, I actually had a "fever" of about 101 when I got home from an attempted run) My heart rate sky rockets too, and it won't come down. Then the blurry vision, dizziness, nauseousness starts, and I am down.  Usually to the ground, just hanging on. It gets scary. And it makes no difference how much I hydrate or how slow I go (even long walks in the humidity do it to me), I still end up with heat exhaustion symptoms EVERY outside workout - Sunday it happened in only 6 minutes of light jogging. I was really glad my husband was with me, he really thought I was going to black out.

I kept trying, I kept going out and doing it because I didn't want to be a wimp - but it never gets better and I am the point of being really afraid of getting sick. I train for tri's for my health - to keep my body healthy. That's my #1 reason, so it seemed counter productive to put my body in such distress. So I've decided that's it, the outside training is done for now - I had an awesome 6 mile run on the treadmill in the gym yesterday. Since its gotten hot I haven't been able to do more than 2-3 outside.  I'm just going to take my training indoors in July/August, do only early season (April/May) races because its easy to train all winter here as it rarely gets below 30, and maybe an Oct one - but nothing in between and just go back to the gym during the summer.

Been in the 90-100 range with high humidity here in NC for the past month and a half.

It's fine for biking, and swimming is done indoors for me so no issues there.

I tend to run at lunch (11AM), so it's pretty warm by that time. I just try to hydrate well prior to and during the run, and haven't really had any problems other than a slightly lowered pace.

I love riding my bike in the heat ... for whatever reason, I seem to do some of my fastest rides in the hottest weather. Most of my rides during the week start at 6PM or so, so there is usually plenty of shade on the roads by then. Try to be on the road by 7AM on weekends.

Recent rains have cooled us down a bit, but the humidity will be through the roof.  I'm focusing more on swimming in the meantime and limiting my biking to early mornings or just before dark.  Overall, it not bothering me too much.

same here.

getting in long rides outdoors usually involves several water stops along the way, 50 mile ride is almost a gallon of water!!!

but, I HTFU thru it, without killing myself, just have to work at the right intensity. That is the art of it!!!

Jen ... Tom ... you guys are serious cases of HTFU. Respect!!!

It's pretty easy here, in comparison. Yes, temps are consistently in the 80s and 90s with humidity about the same, sometimes more, and that's 7 a.m. to about 9 p.m.

We do have this weather all year round, though.

The other day it dropped to 81F at night and everybody was freezing and bundled up. Me too.

I'll even wear cotton long sleeves and jeans now during the day, 'cause I've gone back to my roots like that.

So other than the fact that I still sweat a Vegas fountain out of my head just by sitting around, much less moving (it was the same in California in 60-degree weather ... I just sweat), I think I've acclimated nicely. I will even train at high noon, and it's often in the mid-90s then ... I'm just very careful and take it easy.
