Every completed tri is an accomplishment within itself.  Great job.

Let me put it this way: if I came from a competitive swimming background (and I'm assuming/inserting "competitive"), I would be disappointed if I did't come out of the water 1st in AG in a smallish local sprint. Same thing if I came from a competitive cycling background.

I answered from the prospective of him getting passed by 22 people in his AG.  Obviously, there's something to be proud of (1st out of the water).  And, there's room for improvement (which I and others ALSO acknowledged).  It seems fairly (blatantly) obvious where those opportunities lie.

He did REALLY well.  He has the potential (the proverbial "leg up") to do GREAT.  I wish him all the luck in the world, sincerely.

I ranked (s) 88th (b) 43rd (r) 54th in my 1st tri..  I finished 54th/203, OA (8th in my AG).  I'd expect someone to tell me I need to improve my swimming and running, if I want to move up in my AG.Smile

Why does it matter how *I* would rank it? What if I told you it sucked? What if I told you it was pro-worthy?

If you feel proud, feel proud. Enjoy the moment, then find a way to replicate it and build on it. Where others rank it on their personal barometers of goodness versus suckitude is irrelevant.

acumenjay - 2010-07-21 9:57 AM Honestly, for most local sprints the few guys with a swimming background are always getting out of the water first so while it's great and all it's really kind of expected.  It's like a ex-college basketball player beating some dude in a pickup game.  I'd be sort of let down that I dropped that many places and ended up MOP in my AG after dominating the swim.  It's awesome that you have the the big advantage but I'd shift focus to the bike and run.

Not knocking it.  It's great.  I'll never be first out of the water in any race in any AG so you've got that over me.  I would just be pissed that more than 20 people in my AG passed me after that.  If one leg mattered than I could just blow myself up on the bike every race and say I was top 5%...and leave the part out where I was later passed by everyone on the run.

On a serious note, you have an advantage right now over most people.  If you work on your bike/run than you'll be on the podium in the sprints and olys.

I think acumenJay hit it on the head!  Feel good about your swim split and realize that the bike and run are your limiters.  Put some training hours behind those two events, and pair with your massive swim advatage and you will be a force to be reconed with!  Congrats, now get to work!

I would rate this post a 4.0 on the 4 point GPA accomplishment scale.
