SauseEnte - 2010-07-21 3:52 PM Did you take the pics? I love the second one, great symbolism with the guy's head down.

No...I "borrowed" them from azcentral.com. Thanks azcentral.

dieathlon - 2010-07-21 5:52 PM Good thing I didn't register for Nathan's yet! I was gonna do that next week.
Yeah, Nathans is done.

Do you get your money back? Is this an act of God, blah blah blah type thing? I hadn't registered for Nathan's or SOMA yet but I'm really looking forward to SOMA and would be very disappointed if it's canceled.

Considering that I signed up for Nathans AND Soma in Dec...and now am not able to do either (travel and injuries)...maybe they will give credits to other Red Rock events...that would be great for me but I feel bad for all that were heavy into training...SUCH a bummer! My husband works in the buildings that over look the lake...said leaving work today you could already smell it...yuck!

They didn't refund Barn Burner when it got canceled due to the fire. They will reschedule. But if those new dates don't fit one's schedule they also gave us the option to apply the money to half the Nathans or Soma registrations... Oh well.

My hubby and I are signed up for Soma and we've also booked our flights from North Carolina!  I sooooo hope they either change the location or make Soma a duathlon!

max - 2010-07-21 4:11 PM It's a good thing the dam didn't let go during the IMAZ swim, it would have been a long run back to T-1.

would've been slow too if you had to trudge through the mud in your wetsuit.

I probably would have been able to trudge through faster than I swim.

I rode my bike there last night to see it first hand. It looks ugly... and it smells like a turd covered it burnt hair.

If they make IMAZ into a DU, what distance do they do for the first run? I seem to remember that IMNZ was changed to a DU, wonder if they have a set distance they use or if it depends on the course?

I feel really bad for the dying fish

They changed IMNZ into a du in 2006 due to high winds.  Not sure the distances but the winning pro came in at 3:31.

What *IF* that had popped during a Tri swim? It's like a huge bathtub training, and the flow of water I saw on the news was fast and furiously being drained out.  Holy crap....a whole new thing for me to be freaked out about in the water.
AND I really hope they go down there an SCRAPE the bottom of that thing out. Look at all the garbage in there!! Not to mention years of mucky sediment.  They need to Mr. Bubbles the bathtub while it's drained!!!

I am not sure they would do a leading run.  Any endurance DU I've seen has been bike/run, unlike the shorter ones.

So the Collapse of the dam is actually a positive (less the fish, soma, nathans and smell) for several reasons:
1) we were going to just dredge the bottom, now we can remove all the debris and level.
2) the bladders were already slatted for replacement over the next year requiring the construction of coffer dams which would have been expensive to install and remove.
3) with no water in the lake instillation of the new bladders will only take 90 days as opposed to over a year.
4) it also allows us to get a jump start on pedestrian bridge which will go over the western dam, again saving money on construction costs.

The engineers are out there right now prepping for the removal of the bladders and instillation of the new ones. We have two in hand, one in route and the fourth is being fabricated.

Most of the water that fills the lake is run-off from the mesa plant. We have only had to purchase water a couple times since the original filling. If the lake isnt full from runoff, it will just be purchased from uncle salty.

Ironman will be a go!

I'm SO disappointed!  I heard both Natan's and SOMA will probably be du and the plan is for the lake to be open for IMAZ.  I can't run well enough to du or full IM!  I need to find some other tri close by or just bag the rest of the year!

If SOMA ends up being a du then I'll pass. I'm training for and want to do a 1/2 IM distance race. I was already thinking of skipping Nathan's because of budget cuts. I guess I'll wait and see what Red Rock says.

Brought this up on ST.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone could install anchors on the bottom that are precisely measured that they could just hook up to for races? No more "short courses" or "long courses" or "moving buoys".

Sometimes when life hands you dead fish you just need to use the bass-o-matic.

Well, I can tell you this - No dead bodies! That's good! You should be happy to know that you haven't been swimming with rotting, decomposing corpses.

This just in from Red Rock (Via there Facebook page):

Red Rock Company Good news! Most of you heard about the
Tempe Town Lake dam break, but Nathan Tempe Triathlon, PBR Urban Dirt Triathlon
and Soma Triathlon are still on and all 3 events will be held on the
currently scheduled dates. We have been in close contact with the City of
Tempe and are evaluating options for changing the format, whic...h will likely be a duathlon for each. We expect to have details finalized
in the next few days.

Red Rock Company Additionally, we are very close to finalizing the rescheduled date for Barn Burner. Please stay tuned as we expect to have a confirmation from Kaibab and Coconino National Forests shortly. As you all know, it's been a rough month for Red Rock events, but we sincerely appreciate your patience and continued support, and p...romise to continue hosting the best events in Arizona!

Good for them for making a fast decision. Great company, although I may do the Vegas race instead and let Red Rock keep my money. Kimo and Mike have had a tough year.

Yeah: SOMA or SilverMan? Hard to argue against SilverMan even when TTL isn't a problem.

Nathan's: Well, that's going to be not so good.
