Subject: RE: MADMEN Fans? My wife just got into this, and I catch it here and there, and have her explain things. I always thought the lead Jon Hamm was a standup guy that everyone looked up to, sounds like he's been dirty since the very beginning. Strange story lines there! I just don't want to get caught up in "another" must watch series |

Champion 4942 Richmond, VA | Subject: RE: MADMEN Fans? NPR Fresh Aire interview with the writer. Interesting perspective talking about Don's exploits. The idea is that when he was married and meets someone, it is well understood that they are "hooking up" for the fun of it. By contrast, he know has to "court" this girl and around Thanksgiving, she tells him that if all goes well, she may let it go further by New Year's Eve. WHAT!!! I loved that dichotomy. As a married man, he could get all the tail he wanted b/c both parties knew it was never going anywhere. And now he's relegated to "professionals" because of the landmine of being "available." Also loved the firing of the clients - prudes who want to sell "two piece" suits but don't want it sexy. Granted, I did think the add was ignorant - who makes an analogy of a scantly clad woman to a second story building... |

The folks at SCDP when they are making an inside joke about their "two story" office. I absolutely love the show. It seems like every main character pulls you in two different directions. You should despise Don, but you feel sorry for him. You should feel sorry for Betty, but you can easily despise her. Roger, Pete, etc. They all have redeeming traits, but do scummy things. I actually mix an Old Fashioned before every show. Held off on the smoke though. |

And same with Betty...I want to feel bad for her and hold her hand but I also want to smack her and tell her to stop being an idiot. I'm still cheering for Joan and Roger...gosh I love that crazy old guy |

Expert 1603 Westchester, NY | Subject: RE: MADMEN Fans? Wife and I have talked about it a lot. IMO the only truly sympathetic character has been Sal, and rumor is he will not appear in season 4. All the rest of them have very seedy and nasty sides to them. Even Peggy. You "root" for some of them in spite of it. |

the interview with Matthew Weiner yesterday, he described his challange for starting this season as having to write it as a pilot episode b/c so much has changed. |

I don't think anything in my original post can be considered a "spoiler" if that is what you mean. I just think if you're going to start a thread where you're going to invite discussion and reveal specifics about a show some people haven't seen, you should say so in the title. Anyway, no harm, no foul. I've said from the beginning that Mad Men is The Sopranos without the bloodshed. Lots of morally questionable yet sympathetic characters, you have the subservient yet powerful female characters. Jon Hamm has said that The Sopranos is one of his favorite shows, so it's no surprise. Anyone a True Blood fan? Did you notice that the girl that Don went on the date with was Rev Steve Newlin's wife from last season? My tv worlds are colliding! |

Apologies for missing the boat this time. Mathew Weiner, the creator, writer and producer was worked as a writer on The Sopranos. In fact, David Chase read Weiner's script for the pilot of MADMEN and that is how he hired him to work on Sopranos. I did not recognize the actress from True Blood at first but my wife did. :-) |
