Sunny
Total Time = 2h 10m 48s
Overall Rank = 54/583
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 9/55
Pre-race routine:

The usual, snarfed down a granola bar and took in as much caffeine as possible. There was no coffee available in the hotel that early so the diet coke was my only option.
Event warmup:

Did a quick run up the road and back.
Swim
  • 14m 26s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

After last weeks fiasco, I was determined to have a good swim even if it killed me. Since it was a straight swim out and back, my plan was to just keep my head down and follow the crowd. I think I only sighted twice outbound just to make sure I wasn't being lead astray. I managed to stay with the main crowd and always seemed to have a pair of feet to follow. I pushed hard and didn't let up when I got a little winded like I normally do. My heart rate was higher than I like this early but I shaved off over 1:30 from last year so I was pretty happy.

Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

Went pretty smooth except at the mount line. It was too crowded with people stopping to get on the saddles, so I didn't try a flying mount.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 11s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.95 mile/hr
Comments:

I quickly got up to speed and strapped my shoes on. As soon as I started climbing up Diamond Head I knew I was not recovered from last Sundays 70.3. My legs were fatigued and it showed on the first hill. Once I started downhill or level I could maintain speed but not like I am capable of. Heartbreak Hill hurt a lot. Last year I flew up it like it was an overpass, this year was just a sufferfest due to fatigue. I lost some time form last years bike but I'm ok with it considering the HIM last weekend.
What would you do differently?:

Not do a HIM a week before?
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

I opted to put on socks this time because of the blisters I received last year from the up and down hills of the run. Cost me another 30 seconds or so but I think it was well worth it.

Run
  • 41m 57s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was just an exercise in pain management. The fatigue was setting in but I was still hyped up from my swim so I thought I had a shot at the podium. The hills proved to be too much for my tired legs though. Although I was a few seconds slower than last year, I was still happy with my run.
What would you do differently?:

Not race a HIM the week before?

Great job on this race!

I was wondering how much Vineman was going to affect you. I'm glad I didn't sign up for Tinman this year since I haven't even touched the bike or gone for a run since Coeur d'Alene.

Awesome job considering your HIM the previous week.

I'm glad you guys started way behind me in the wave starts.  I there were enough people passing me on the run as it is.
