Subject: Working In Norfolk - how's this bike route?
I'm popping down from the MD forums.  I'll be stuck in Norfolk 7-8 Aug over the weekend for work.  I'd like to get a long ride in.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this:

The route is leaving straight from my hotel.  Specifically, I'd like to a) not get run over trying to get out of the city and b) have a reful stop or two around half way or a little longer.  Can anyone speak to those roads or if there are stores along the route?

Thanks a lot!

Joe

Oh, and if its as flat as it looks, I'm guessing my avg would be about 20 mph if anyone would like to join.

Depending on the time of day you start your route you should be okay.  I just moved to MD from Va Beach and lived right in the area you are riding.  You can also contact Bike Beat which is right off of Kempsville road (Kemps River) and they have rides leaving every Sat and Sun morning from the shop down into the area you are heading with different groupings.  I would be very cautious returning on Holland Road as there is a ton of traffic and construction on this road, especially around Lynnhaven Parkway.  By 10:00am on a Saturday morning you will have a lot of traffic to contend with in the Independence areas as well.  Once you are south of Damneck Road you will have a really nice ride but the roads you will be riding on have mostly 45-55 mph zones and people will drive every bit of this plus more and there are no bike paths south of North Landing, that I can remember.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'm planning to leave early-ish.

Anyone have any suggestions on how better to get out of the city?

Thanks.

Welcome!!

The route you posted has you in high traffic areas to get out of town and again on the return. Personally, I drive to get out of the high density traffic-- and I live here!!

Here is a very popular route, low traffic route very similar to the one you posted. It starts at Fat Frogs bike shop in Red Mill Commons.
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/va/virginia-beach/84681...
The route is through the farms/rural section of southern Virginia Beach with very little traffic. It is dead flat and the only "hill" is the Pungo Ferry Bridge. There is a little store(mini-mart) for fuel/drinks around mile 16-17 and again the same store on the return.
It isn't quite as long as the route you posted, but you can lengthen it it by "looping" between Charity Neck Rd and Muddy Creek Rd.

Also, Fat Frogs bike shop in Red Mill Commons has a great group ride. Check their website for a ride schedule. They have a big turnout for their Sat am ride.

Hope that helped. Again, welcome and enjoy your stay!

I'd avoid Holland Road and Princess Anne Road.  These are not to amenable to cyclists.

As far as how to get out of the City.  This sucks...but, your best bet would be to load your bike on a car and drive to the Great Bridge area.  From there, you can pick some nice roads and get to the same place...and significantly reduce your chances of being hit.

Sorry.

Well, I'm sorry, but I've just wasted your time.  I was supposed to be working thur, fri, mon, but now I'm just Th-F and going home for the weekend.

I appreciate all the help though, and will keep it in mind if I'm ever back and looking to ride.

Thanks again.
