I went out biking yesterday evening, to do a few loops around the neighborhood.  During the first loop there was a young boy who decided to "race" me.  He's pedaling ahead of me and peeking over his shoulder to see if I'm gaining ground.  Well I geared up and slowly pulled even with him.  I checked my speedometer and this kid, 7 or maybe 8 years old, on a 20" one speed bike was going 16 mph!

me: "You're really fast.  You're doing 16 mph."

kid: "No way!"

me: "Yes way!"

He then gave up the chase and rode off with a big smile on his face.  The next three loops, he was skateboarding in his driveway with some other kids and every time I went by, they yelled "How fast are you going?"  Nice motivation.  Yet humbling.

Yeah! We have all forgotten what we were able to do when we were kids and how effortless it was. Let me tell you about the similar event. We have this "Swim/Run Series" (organized by the local tri race company) every Tuesday. This is kind of a training/racing with chip timing, etc. The distances increase every month. The other day we were swimming 600 meters and running 2.5 miles. And there was this 15 year old kid. He came out of the water after 9 min - 3 min before anybody else. And when I told one of my racing bodies, how fast this kid's swim was, he said: "How about his running? I bet he was slow, because of the hard effort during the swim..." I looked at the results - his pace was 5:39/mile. I wondered how much the kid swims and runs ... Maybe a lot ... maybe not ... I've been diligently training for quite a while now, but I am not even near his performance.
So you are right - it is a nice motivation, but also it is very humbling...

But you probably made that kid's whole week.  He's probably boasting to all his friends about how he 'raced that bike-guy'.

Kids have NO SENSE of being tired or pacing for that matter.  Don't sweat it.  You'd kick his butt in a loooooong distance ride.   He wouldn't know to carry water bottles and Gels and such.  LOL

I take my boys out with me for speedwork. I have a little slowtwitch guy who can go all day at his own pace and a speed demon rabbit who runs 6 minute miles without breathing hard at 8! I am hoping they take up running but right now they just like racing Mom and, most of the time, beating her.
