Swim
Comments: the first 26 minutes was pure panic and hyperventillatiion. It looked like the scene from titanic when the boat sank and everyone was flailing in the water. aftter I rounded the second turn to head back, the remainder of the swim was glorious. Followed the rope under water and never veered off course. Transition 1
Comments: took it slow due to rain and I knew I had a long day ahead of me. No need to rush here. I knew my wife was concerned about the swim so I asked a kind spectator to text my wife that I was out of the water and on to the bike. Bike
Comments: First 20 or so miles it was raining, but I didn't care. I was cranking. Averaged 19.5 mph for the first 20 and even hit 37 mph on the scary downhill in the rain. After that the climbing started and pain slowly crept in. Finished the first lap really good but I got a little bummed when I stopped at the special needs for my replacemnt bottles and my sandwich. Turns out no bottles in my bag and only half a sandwich. I will later find out I switched the run and bike special needs bags. Second lap the headwinds and crosswinds kicked up. First 20 barely got to 18 mph and even on dry roads I couldn't get Shadow to get over RG mph on the scary downhill. By mile 80 my right shoulder was screaming at me so I stopped at a medical tent for some ben gay and it worked wonders. Then the last 12 were killer. Steady climbing with short flats and my toes on both feet went numb. I started to question if I ould even start the marathon let alone finish it. Couldn't even stand on the last few climbs of baby bear, mama bear or papa bear due to the numbness. Finsihed the second lat and hobbled into transition. Transition 2
Comments: once I got my cycling shoes off all the feeling came back to my feet. I guess my feet swelled up a great deal in the shoes. Once my running shoes were on I was golden, although I knew I was in for a long marathon. On the way out of transition I asked a kind women to text my wife with my bike time and to warn her I would be doing alot of walking. I did a complete outfit change during this transition. Run
Comments: this was tough. To run 26.2 miles after all I did already. I did a great deal of walking and did not run a complete mile at all. What got me from aid station to aid station were the chocolate chip cookies. I at 1 or 2 at each aide stationg for the first 17 miles. So I ate about 28 cookies during that time. I also drank a cup of water, a cup of energy drink and a cup of cola at every station. Chatted with lots of nice people and got throug most of the marathon walking with pasquale, a military musician. I couldn't thank him enough for being there to walk with to cure the boredom. After about mile 17 I switched my nutritional concoction to warm chicken broth which was delicious followed by flat cola shooters. The hardest part was about 2 miles left on the first loop the spectators kept shouting your almost there. Well no I wasn't, I had an entirre lap left. At about 1/4 mile to go to the skating rink, Pasquale and I decided to run it in and look great. We ran side by side into the arena to such screams and cheers and around the first bend. After that I thanked him and pulled back a scooch to let him finish ahead of me. Then all I remember hearing was mike reilly say "scott greenstone, you are an Ironman" and then fell into a wonderful woman's arms as she put my medal over my head. I think I briefly wept. And started hugging every volunteer I could find. Post race

Arrived in Lake Placid on Thursday afternoon. Checked out the town and then checked into the hotel. Afyer settling in I went out for a 4 mile run which felt great. Woke up Friday morning at 530 to meet some BTers for a swim. Did one loop of the swim course and felt great. After the warm up swim I checked n for the race, got weighed, got all my bags for transiton and specal needs and then went shopping for a thank you gift for my wife. Didn't find something until late in the day on saturday. My racing buddy met me at the ice rink around 1:30 and we grabbed a bite to eat. Friday night packed all my transition bags and made my fuelbelt bottles.
Woke up Saturday morning and moved my bike across the room and apparently broke my valve and got a flat. Had to
change the tube and went out for an unplanned 10 mile ride to make sure the new tube was good. While we were out on the ride we stopped for breakfast.
Saturday night was spent preparing our nutrition and bottles and swim gear. In bed at 930 with alarm set for 330.
Woke up at 330 after a surpsingly good nights sleep. Made a bowl of granola with vanilla milk and woke up John. Drove the Are Minutes to town and found what turned out to be a great parking spot along the bike and run course.
loaded up our bikes with bottles and food. Changed into our wetsuits and headed down to drop off special needs bags and go to the swim start.
