You have to love the political peacocking of a State Agency during a time frame where all State Services have been reduced.  Seems as if it is a great time to apply for and probably get a relief appropriation for funding if the State can make the case that they were understaffed and unable to adequately inspect Tempe to help avoid the dam from breaking.  Toss in a salad of Lawyers and the real fun can start.

Still think the money that Ironman Arizona brings to the community will  be enough to keep the politicians from "having a dialog" on the issues and delaying action like we see so very often?

I've had a chance to talk to Hugh Hallman and come hell or high water they will be ready for IMAZ. I'm guessing that they will start to fill the lake sometime in Mid October and have at least 4 weeks to stabilize the water quality. Even if they have to build a temporary dam structure until the foam dams are installed I believe it will be done. The sad thing is that the lake will probably be full for SOMA but will not be usable for humans at that point.

Also, the delay doesn't really put anything behind schedule because the 4th part of te dam system won't be on site until Sept anyway.

I'm holdin you up to this.  Now that I can't rely on Bryan's positive outlooks, I'll just ask you whenever I need happy news.

Thanks for the update btw!

I like Todd's answer a LOT more than Bryan's poop jokes.

For the first time this year, I'm really glad I'm not registered for the 2010 event. I'd be sweating right now over this!

IMHO, there's no sense worrying about whether TTL will be filled or not on Nov. 21. This far out, and until there's more definite news, you have to train for IMAZ like it's going to be a normal Ironman. If the swim portion falls through, you'll be better trained for future events, and the cross training benefits of swimming will vastly outweigh any benefit you'd get by doing any extra running as if training for a DU.

Personally, though, I'm really hoping the lake is ready. I have a hard time believing that I could sign up for two Ironman events in 2010 and at the end of the year still not have truly earned the M-Dot.

I hope it's filled by then. That really would be a bummer, Kim. I'm still disappointed that I have to wait over a year to earn mine!

No longer on hold and they should start work this next week. They already have two sections so we'll see how fast those get installed. Once the other two sections arrive, they'll get them installed and then 8 days to fill it up. I'm guessing about a month or so to balance the water for human use and it might be open in late Oct.

Yep, glad I don't have to stress about it either.  I'm signed up for the 2010...but as a volunteer.  I'll be out there doing 2011 IMAZ.

I presume there won't be any questions about the lake by then.  Of course, if it's in the hands of politicians...
