Pro 5011 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: What pants do you wear cycling? briderdt - 2010-07-29 8:31 PM I personally hate bib shorts. I know, lots of people will ride in nothing else -- fine with me. The shorts I've found most comfortable are the Performance Century shorts with the standard synthetic chamois. I've always liked those, as well. I lost my last pair in a bike crash, though. (well, I didn't LOSE them...they just sort of shredded to nthing :p) I've since switched to the PI Sugar Shorts. |

Tri shorts are not way near as comfortable comapred to bike shorts though... Will you be racing in Tri-shorts or Bike shorts? I use tri shorts on the majority of my long rides, because that's what I'll be using on race day. Get used to it now, or suffer later! |

Regular 93 | Subject: RE: What pants do you wear cycling? I have one pair of MTB shorts that I wear offroad because I need the padding when jolting over rocks, and a pair of tri shorts that I find are more comfortable for pavement. Never worn bibs, and probably won't, because to me they look goofy and I would feel like a fool wearing them. But I'm new to cycling shorts of any kind, I just got them last month, before that I was riding in running shorts. And by the way if you go for running shorts on your bike try and get ones that aren't super short 'cause they have a tendency to ride up a bit. Chafing is a danger. I don't really recommend it, but it's not awful. *edit* I guess no one on this board is allowed to talk about donkeys? What a strange thing to censor. Edited by Alukonis 2010-07-30 9:39 AM |

Master 2203 Columbus, Ohio Coaching member | Subject: RE: What pants do you wear cycling? x2 on tri shorts all the time except when they are all in the laundry. You just get used to it. Personally, I find them more comfortable now. There's nothing to bunch up. Plus I frequently run off the bike - like 2/3rd of the time - so that makes it easier. (I don't do it because I think bricks are the holy grail. I do it mostly for scheduling reasons and to run with my tri friends who are also trying to fit in another workout before the workday starts.) I also swim (open water) in tri shorts most of the time, too, because, again, I frequently run after. Also because I drive to work after OWS to shower, and I'd rather walk down the hall in tri shorts and a T-shirt versus a swimsuit. Especially if someone is meeting in the board room across from the shower. I think women probably don't really get into the whole bib idea because of the bathroom issues. Who wants to take their shirt off and then take the bibs down just to pee? What a PITA. |

Veteran 200 Summerfield, NC | Subject: RE: What pants do you wear cycling? Bibs 75% of the time. I have a couple of shorts I'll use for short trainer rides. Tri shorts if I need to see how they feel on the bike, will they chafe, how they feel after x amount of miles. You do need to look around at the padding and find what's comfortable for you. A good pair of bibs are worth it, nothing more comfortable. |

Elite 3315 Miami | Subject: RE: What pants do you wear cycling? newbz - 2010-07-29 8:08 PM i used to wear tri shorts for everything, were comfortable, fit well, cheaper. then i started riding more per week, and i very quickly switched to a good pair of bibs. the benifits for me, they last longer, they are a lot more comfortable around the waist (not having a waist to them is awesome), they match my jersey, and i can ride a lot each day and not shred the shorts and my crotch. i have a pair of specilazed bib shorts that i wear for almost all my training, along with a pair of both winter bib tights, and thermal 3/4 length ones for fall/spring weather. +1...i never thought bibs could be that comfy...i can do 50 miler without blinking an eye....tri uni or shorts eh....by the time i hit mile 40 i start to get antsy.... |

And I couldn't disagree more. I love bibs and hate the Performance shorts. It's totally a matter of personal preference. I like bibs beacuse it removes the threat of plumber's crack and supports your diaphragm for better breathing. That's why you see the pros in bibs (breathing, not the butt crack part). |

Same for tri bike unless I'm doing a brick where I can't change...then it's tri shorts and shirt. Last night I did a brick in a regular kit, had all my run stuff laid out and just changed real fast. That way, I don't have to look like a dork riding in tri gear, or look like a dork running in tri gear....I can ride in cycling apparel and run in running apparel. I do my best to only race in my tri stuff if I can help it. |

Expert 939 Tulsa | Subject: RE: What pants do you wear cycling? I wore bike shorts/bibs for the first year i did tri's and i have only wore tri shorts ever since (2 years). The problem with bike shorts in general are that they do create more numbness while in the tri position. Also there is so much padding that it causes major chaffing issues with me. Also, I don't know where your bib wearers live, but my lower back used to get really hot while riding in the tri position on my tri bike in the heat. Maybe this is all different for road bikes, but I only wear tri shorts for everything. Threw all my bike shorts away. Even the $120 ones. |

Champion 4902 Ottawa, Ontario | Subject: RE: What pants do you wear cycling? After many many years of riding with bike shorts, I tried bibs 3 years ago. I have never bought another pair of shorts since. When I ride, I wear my bibs (or a one piece tri suit, which is the same as wearing a bib). The comfort level of bibs surpasses shorts by a lofty margin. Edited by Machiavelo 2010-07-30 1:47 PM |

Who wants to take their shirt off and then take the bibs down just to pee? What a PITA. FYI...I wear bibshorts, and I'm a woman. Personally, I love 'em. Perhaps you're not aware of this, but lots of companies are now making women's bibshorts with a "drop tail" design. Pearl Izumi, Hincapie, and Gore are a few that come to mind, that currently have drop tail bibs on the market for women. I wouldn't be surprised if they all start to adopt that concept in the future. My current 2 pairs of bibshorts do not have a drop tail, but I don't care...the comfort of them trumps the minor inconvenience they pose during "pitstops". |
