I don't live too far away from the event and also I did the Du in May which is the same run and bike course. Did the OWS practice this morning again and you need to watch out for some pretty thick vegetation between 1st and 2nd turn buoy and then again between the 2nd and 3rd. Probably stay as inside as possible between those two buoys. Had stuff hanging on me and kinda messes you up a bit. Lookin' forward to it! |

Member 44 Abingdon, MD | Subject: RE: Fort Ritchie Triathlon : Official Thread My sister and I were at the swim this morning as well. She signed up right afterwards and this will be her first tri. I'm debating signing up for this too but I'm signed up for Northeast (sprint) the week after so I'm not sure if it's smart. What do you all think?? I'm not competitive or fast, just enjoying the experiences |

What do you all think?? I'm not competitive or fast, just enjoying the experiences If your goal is just to finish and enjoy, then I would think you could sign up for Ft Ritchie as well. If nothing else, it allows you to compare the race venues and perhaps help you decide for next year. If you were doing this in an intense competition, then I would say to skip Ft Ritchie unless you wanted to use it as a shake down event. But, since that doesn't sound like the case, why not enjoy them both? Maybe see ya there! |

Wife and I have done Hagerstown for the last 4 years, Ken puts on a great races. Heard the bike is pretty hilly from those that have done the du there. Any insight on the run? First on the bike though, there's one fairly continuous hill that will be a challenge on the way back for most folks. You get to scream down it on the way out and then there are a few rollers to deal with before heading back. The run - there are what I would say are two significant hills on the course, just around mile 2 and then after that at mile 2.4. The problem is that it's a double loop course for the Olympic folks. So, you have to tackle these again for the second loop of the 10K. There are some flat stretches so you do get to catch your breath so to speak. Still, I remember on the Du that last hill the second time was near walking speed for me and a few folks did just that. If you want to check it out, I did a race report on the Du which was May 15. And then having them pass me on the run So YOU'RE the ONE! ;-) Just kidding of course. As a slower swimmer, it does seem like there's always one race I'm in where there's one guy and it's just me and him on a section of the course. Bumps and climbs all over me and can't seem to get away! When faced with that, I'll just breast stroke for a second and let him pass. BTW, I often catch some of the fast swimmers on the bike. Watch for the blue Felt S32 and red aero helmet. See ya on the course! :-) Edited by sbrdave 2010-08-01 6:08 PM |

Or, if you drive south to Frederick, there are a lot of choices if you drive on 15 South and get off at Route 40 West. Linda |

The exit for both of these is for Catoctin Furnace Road, route 806. Now these are buffet places so LOTS to eat, which maybe isn't overly grand the night before a race. But good selections at both to choose from and they're family restaurants if you have children. There are also fast food places like Roy Rogers, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut nearby as well. Like Linda said, you could also drive south a ways towards Frederick if you want to see about something else. Before 40 West, there's route 26 which has a few places in the Giant Shopping area like California Totillas and Panera Bread. A bit confusing to get to though going south on 15. Then off of the first 7th St exit, there's a group of restaurants in the shopping plaza that you see as you exit. One more to consider is the Shamrock Restaurant just to the north of Thurmont on the left side of 15. Eaten there a few times and it's a decent sit down restaurant. Hope you find something to your liking and maybe see you at the race. I'll have my Frederick Triathlon Club jersey on. |

Was extremely skeptical of a Super 8, but it's gotten a lot of good reviews, and I have driven by it and looks fine. Looks like this one will be a non-wetsuit swim unless things cool down this week (haha) See you on Sat Linda! |

Extreme Veteran 423 Frederick, Maryland | Subject: RE: Fort Ritchie Triathlon : Official Thread Mr. BoH - 2010-08-05 12:55 PM Anyone know what the current water temp is? I officially started my taper today. Either that or I overslept this morning. It was 78 last week and I would bet it's not going to be too much different tomorrow. Since this isn't a USAT sanctioned event, there's really no rule against wearing wetsuits. Ken will have more to say about that tomorrow. However, if the temp is in the upper 70s or higher, you do begin to cook in a full wetsuit and it does affect you once you end the swim. You could be okay with a sleeveless if you need the buoyancy. |

Extreme Veteran 423 Frederick, Maryland | Subject: RE: Fort Ritchie Triathlon : Official Thread Weather looks great for racing tomorrow folks! Temps - race start 67 (might be a bit cooler though), 9 AM 72, 11 AM 76 low humidity w/dewpoints in the mid 50s clear skies light winds, calm to variable at race start, coming up to 5mph from the south late morning So heat and humidity shouldn't be an issue tomorrow, nor should the winds. The only issue is the sun on the swim. From our practice swims, it will be difficult seeing the flags where you get out of the lake at because the sun is coming up that way. One thing that you can use is the sun rays in the water. If you can keep those on a somewhat constant bearing, you should be able to reach the exit point. Also, there's a line of pine trees to keep on your right when you're heading to the exit point. Other than that, just the vegetation on the swim could still be an issue between buoys 1 adn 2 and then 2 and 3. Also, watch for glass on the big hill. Hopefully they'll sweep the shoulder but I've often seen big areas of glass there. Good luck to everyone and see you on the course! |

Extreme Veteran 423 Frederick, Maryland | Subject: RE: Fort Ritchie Triathlon : Official Thread Just returned from packet pickup. Water temp is 78 and wetsuits will be allowed. Though what I said previously about this not being USAT sanctioned is true, the race directions from Ken indicated that he wouldn't allow wetsuits if water temps were 80 or above. But the sign on the registration door said 78 and wetsuits would be allowed. Still, if you have a sleeveless, that's probably the better choice. I won't be wearing one cuz I don't have a sleeveless and get far too warm with a full one on. I did that at Ealgeman in 08 just because of the distance and the sea nettles. Hopefully, I'll win one of the Xterra wetsuits being given away at this race so I can also have a sleeveless! :-) GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! |
