I've only just seen this - but I cannot run without my Enell bra - they really are the best (DD) http://www.enell.com/
They feel so comfortable and hold everything in place without cutting off your air!!

I was starting to wonder about this issue..

So what do you do about transitions? Do you just wear the sports bra under your swim or wetsuit? I was sort of just thinking I'd get a super tight swimsuit, is that total folly?

For a tri, I usually wear a sports bra and a tri top with tri shorts.  I put the wetsuit over all of it.

You can just wear a swimsuit if that works for you.  I don't think that would give me enough support during the run, but I've seen women do it. It can be really difficult to get on more clothes while you are wet, so if that's your plan, make sure to practice it first.

As a 36D, that would be total folly for me. Besides, once those Cooper's ligaments stretch, the only way to fix them is surgery... I don't want knives near my girls, so I give them the support they need to remain perky!

Sports bra (non-cotton, super supportive) with tri-top and tri-shorts under the wetsuit works.

I do the same as the other two girls, sports bra, tri top, tri shorts all under wetsuit.  for my upcoming IM though I plan on doing complete wardrobe changes in transition.  don't think my girly bits would appreciated 180 km in tri shorts.

When I was a student on a tighter budget I would wear a sports bra under a swimsuit and tri shorts over top.  Worked okay for spints, but I wouldn't try it for longer races.  The swimsuit under tri shorts for a long bike ride is just asking for nasty chaffing issues.

For my first Tri, I wore my Tri Shorts and sports bra under my Tigershark suit.  After the swim, I took the suit off and put my jersey on for the bike.  For a couple seconds I was standing around in my sports bra, but I didn't really care.  Tongue out

Thanks for the replies!

I do a lot of cold water swimming in NorCal, so not planning on wearing a wetsuit in LA. Do you all think it would work just to wear the rest of it, sans wetsuit? Sounds like a cold start to the bike ride, though.

Definitely gonna need to practice that transition..

I often just wear my bra with a trisuit (or bra with swimsuit for a long swim, otherwise too much drag) and find that it is fine to get on the bike.  You are only cold for a little while...if you stay cold, pedal harder!    Or throw on a vest or arm warmers, both which are easier to put on in transition than a shirt, in my opinion.

I have almost all Moving Comfort bras, and I'm a 34DD or 36D.  Only thing I don't really love is the "uni-boob" look after wearing them for a half an hour or so.  If I get more, I will look at the underwire ones, maybe Maia.  They are good quality bras and hold up well after many runs, lots of sweat and lots of washing.

Yikes,

I think the secret to the Enell bras are getting the right size. I have two, one in size 2, one in size 3 (I'm a 38 DD). Although the 3 is more comfortable, the 2 is what keeps everything in place, without budging one iota. Depends on how much bounce you can live with. For me, I want zilch.

In terms of what to wear during a tri, I wear my enell under an old running shell, plus tri shorts..all under my wetsuit. In T1, I just change swap my old shell with a clean, dry one. Because of limited arm movements on the bike, I don't find that I have any chafing riding with a wet bra. And by the time the run comes about, I'm dryed off (except for the rib band) anyways.

And, I find that men's sleeveless cycling jerseys (or Terry jerseys) and water polo swimsuits have the most coverage. I usually wear a bra to swim practice under my suit, and the WP suits are great for hiding the brastraps.

Great thread everyone!

Jen

First of all, make sure that you know your correct bra size.

http://www.85b.org/bra_calc.php

Many people wear the wrong size which results in poor support. Next, go try on as many quality looking sports bras as you can find and choose the best one for your body. I don't recommend buying online because it's impossible to know how it will fit you.

My personal preference is La Senza's sports bras, but the larger sizes are being discontinued.

One more thing - racer back style offers more support and also keeps the straps from slipping off of the shoulders.
