I am only 6 weeks into serious bike training. Today I got my butt kicked hard. I planned a 27 mile ride that has 12 miles of flat trails on it. I took off into a 10+ mph head wind and a heat index of over 100. After 10 minutes my HR was 165 and I still had a couple of decent hills to climb. At the 30 minute mark I was dying and think about calling my wife to get me. My Gatorade was not just warm it was HOT!. I reached the next town at the 35 minute mark ( aproximately 6.75 miles). I decide to turn for home. I was able to cruise a little on the flats on the way back with the wind at my back. MY HR never dropped below 150 (I should be riding in the 135-145 range). Just outside of my town were a couple of good hill. I used them as an opportuinty to practice attacking on hills. The second one I accelerated from 15 mph to over 20 while climbing (not bad for a 44 year old I thought). When I got home I was drenched and dead. I figure it was the heat but my pace was way down. Anybody else have the same expereince on training rides in the heat and wind?

i've had to can a couple of runs recently because the heat was absurd (Raleigh NC). I got about 2 or 3 miles into 6 mile runs got chills and had to stop. Being a moderate type A that is a hard thing to do. Luckily I use a HRM so I know when I am over exerting and not training smart. The heat kills my times if I am doing a hard run - same with the bike, not so much with swimming though since you are in cool water

Good lord NO man. I never ride that long! My longest run thus far is 29 miles. You are a major stud muffin! Drenched after a workout I get tho. I came in from my 10 miler yesterday and my husband asked me if I had just got out of the shower (He brought me water then went home and went back to bed, the bum).

You totally ROCK! Dang! Sometimes when I am on the bike I start humming the theme to the Wicked Witch of the West or say, in a relaly Minnie Mouse voice, "I want to be an Ironman". : )

i am a newb, BUT I went for a medium ride yesterday, and noticed my front brake was rubbing, so i cut my bike short. I havent been running due to an injury so i decided to go for a run (i felt good, my knee has been feeling good) and my first brick hit me.... HARD. I am now just realizing how HARCORE this sport is.

But then again i started training because (as we said in the army) i needed to get SMOKED. I need to get my ass kicked. I enjoy going to work in pain from my training, because im getting stronger... WOW i do get off the point BUT... I understand the need to cut a bike short. We need to do that which is healthy for us.

My song on the last hill was Aresmith's "I'm Back In the Saddle Again" (even thought I was out of the saddle kicking it up the hill). I love the bike. My wife was a little taken aback when I rolled in sooner than I had told her. I think she was worried I had injured myself. We were watching the news together and I told her I was thinking about trying the ride again tommorrow. Then the weather came on. Heat index of 110 and 40 mph winds. I told her maybe I would swim instead. She just started to laugh. I lost 2 pounds on that ride alone (of course it was all in my shirt so I was still carrying the wieght on the bike.) We did take some pics when I got in and I hope to have my bald head as my avatar instead of the lone wolf. I am also looking at going out early tommorrow.

The wind always kicks my a$$, but you know what they say about that which doesn't kill us

Besides, you never know when you will encounter crappy weather on a race day.  I think it's better to train in it and learn to deal, within reason of course!  100 deg HI is a little extreme.  I probably would have skipped the hill attacks.  But then again maybe not.

Heat is no joke, and unless you've been training in it AND you are replacing your fluids, you should not be trying to go fast. (In other words, treat training in the heat like other things - build up a base, then you can go harder.)  You should expect your HR to be higher than normal, and you should also expect to sweat more than normal. IMO, it's really a good idea to train in the heat, as we (as insane triathletes) will sooner or later be in a race where we hit the run portion at 10:30 am (or later) with a temperature of 90 (or higher).

I just wish we had some hot weather over here in New Zealand.   We had a duathlon this morning and they had to check the road for ice before we started (its the middle of winter) brrrrr.  Roll on Spring!

Cadreamer, I live here in SoCal at the beach where even when it's 100 degrees in LA, it's 75 here. I am doing Caliman in September, and have heard Davis can be HOT then. I know you're a couple hours from there, but should I be training in midday sun to get ready for this thing?

Okay, the Sacramento Valley is about 70 miles inland.  So temps right now (mid-July) are in the high 90's to mid-100's.  Temps in September?  Variable.  I could see it being fairly cool (say 70's) to hot (about 90+.)    I'd say generally for September the Sacramento Valley runs about 5-10 degrees hotter than LA in September, so that should give you a pretty good idea.

Train in the heat?  Yeah.  100+?  I don't think you need to do that, but at least some training in high 80's to low 90's would be important I think.  If it is hot and you're not acclimated, you can blow your race right out of the water.  I did this to myself in 2004 (worst race ever) an Oly distance race, my time was 30 minutes slower than the year before.  Why? I was a training wimp that year, and I did NO running in the heat of the day.  I ended up having to walk most of the run, and it was NOT fun.

Tyrant if u see your brakes rubbing you know that they move with just a little push . I too got my A$$ kicked today by the wind and sun. It was around a 100 heat index and the real heat was in the 90's. The wind was brutal (15-25mph) when coupled with the wind. It cut my 30 miler down to 25 and the last six miles I was in a head wind drinking cytomax that was extremely HOT!

I wimped out today. It was hot and very windy so I was a slug. I know we all need rest days. I was pretty beat from yesterday. There still is a chance I may go lift weights and get in a little run. Tomorrow is a new day. I hope to work a little swimming in this week also.
