Age Group Rank = 7/10
Pre-race routine:

arrived the day before and did an easy bike. Enjoyed the pre-race pasta dinner and went back to Mary's house and waited for Dave to arrive, and arranged race gear. Woke up at 5:45, ate a boiled egg, half a banana, and half a cliff bar. Arrived at the race with Dave at 7:15 and set up. Took drugs at 8pm and 6am. Currently using Bisoprolol 10mg, Enalipril, Lipitor (first race on statin) and low dose aspirin.
Event warmup:

Saw the current was really stiff- well pass high tide. Did a short swim preceded by a 1k ride.
Swim
  • 20m 35s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

started up by the shore with 5 others in slower current, most folks were in the centre! Started with a good draft but pace was a bit slow. Struggled towards the end of the first leg as I wore down-current made that happen sooner than expected. crossing the river at the top and again at the bottom I swam well over the lay line and that worked out really well-passed several guys who were set by the current. Stood up for a 15-20 seconds on last leg against the current as I was gasping due to the effort, though breathing technique was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Stay in a draft longer to save energy
Transition 1
  • 02m 45s
Comments:

slow walk to T1 as I was hypoxic/gasping, the usual exertion thing, and then struggled very briefly w/wetsuit on right heel where chip was. Actually a good T1 for me.
What would you do differently?:

quicker wetsuit removal
Bike
  • 40m 28s
  • 20 kms
  • 29.65 km/hr
Comments:

Bike felt good all around, good mount, had shoes on and strapped by 600M. Started to gag a bit after drinking blue power mixed w/ water but it may have been a stomach thing from the swim as well.Could have gone a bit harder I think. Good dismount.
What would you do differently?:

Ramp up speed a bit more, maybe 5%.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 29m 36s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 55s  min/km
Comments:

walked the first rise/ 70 metres to stop gasping and ran the rest- kept pace slow to start and hope to feel well and push the last half but pace was constant. Ran the the whole race except for 1 water stop very briefly, drank a bit of water and that was it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing . First sub 30 minute 5k tri since 2006, so perhaps the decline has stopped!
Post race
Warm down:

stretched a bit- little dizzy so ate some sugars.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

stomach issues on bike, and the Beta Blockers still have a terribly limiting effect- may try dosing later the pre-race eve and holding the morning dose until post race and see if that helps or lets the HR go out of control. Will try it in training first!
