Wilson, New York

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 54m 36s
Overall Rank = 142/181
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 3/6
Pre-race routine:

After eating a peanut butter and banana sandwich, my husband and boys headed into Wilson from our campsite. We arrived, unloaded bike and gear and headed to the registration area. After getting the body markings (still cool to me!) and timing chip, I headed into the transition area to set up my gear. Then I walked around with my family and met up with my mom and stepdad, who came to see the race. We also had a friend, James, there racing as well. His wife and son cheered us on later. Closer to race time, I put on the wetsuit, listened to the instructions and headed down to the water, hoping my goggles would really work this time. Pretty nervous about the swim, but the water was beautifully clear and calm!
Event warmup:

Got into the water and did a short swim to loosen up, along with some stretching.
Swim
  • 12m 49s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was very happy with the swim! It was so much better this time, and I did not have any panicky moments. Just fun! The swim time also includes the run up the steps to the transition area.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Need a little more practice getting out of the wetsuit. Not bad, though, for the first time using one.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 39s
  • 20 miles
  • 17.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I just do not have enough know-how when it comes to biking. I've practiced a lot, but still do not know when to use what gear. . . It was pretty frustrating to be passed continually by faster riders. I felt like I was giving it all I had.
What would you do differently?:

My husband, after watching my race and talking to our experienced friend, thinks I need a road bike. I am currently riding a hybrid Trek. Maybe next summer. Also maybe clipless pedals and some training with an experienced biker.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

The race belt made this transition much easier!
Run
  • 29m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I was expecting the brick-like effect on my legs, and managed to work through it. It went away after about 1/2 mile. But I was just very, very tired. The bike took a lot out of me. I kept running, though, and didn't stop. My husband and boys were waiting at one corner on the course telling me to keep going. Our friend, James, came back to run the last 1/4 mile or so with me. That was helpful, and then when I turned the corner and heard the cheers for me, it was a great feeling! I did it!
What would you do differently?:

Just keep training
Post race
Warm down:

Water, lots of it. Granola bar and pasta salad. Walked around and rested a bit in the shade

Event comments:

A great race! Can't wait to go back next year and do even better!

Nice work!  With a road bike and another year of training, you're going to dominate that race next year!
