I personally use Hammer Perpetuem. For a ride of this intensity, one bottle per hour and supplement with Gu, Sharkies & Sport Beans. I also use and recommend Hammer's Endurolytes to help ward off potential cramps. All of the rest stops are well stocked (at least last year) and you can get a variety of things there (pretzles, sandwich, etc). I just try to use a liquid nutrition to keep from having a full belly (or really anything in it) as I'm on the very of dry heaving up Hogpen. As repeated often on this site, don't try anything new on raceday. GI issues at the Gaps would be no fun! Looks like we're in for some cooler (high of 72F) but potentially wet (50% chance) weather. Check your brakes and tires 'fo 'sho (may want to dual compound or wet weather pads).

Nutrition is a presonal thing ... but make sure that you take in enough hydration, electrolytes and easy to digest calories (generally speaking between 60-70 carbs/hr) and you will do fine.

Tha SAG stops are pretty frequent for hydration purposes.  They have fruits and snacks but you may not want to load up on all that they have and prefer to bring your own.

The ascent up Neals Gap goes on forever. Wolfpen is shorter but steeper.  Woody's Gap is not that bad ... but remember that there is still a lot of climbing to be done through the rollers post rock pile, so save your legs!

Brad E - 2010-09-24 8:40 AM So this will be my first 3 Gaps ride.  It hit me last night that I might want to bring some nutrition (duh!) but don't have a clue how much.  I know that nutrition is personal but what do others bring?

Haha, that was miserable yesterday! I held on and did the Six Gap but suffered because I didn't bring a windjacket or anything. I was dreading the descents, not because of the terror of not being able to slow myself down, but due to the drop in temp. Definitely won't forget this year's for a while.

That is funny.  I kept saying basically the same thing yesterday to Brad and Sabra.  On nice days you are looking forward to the downhills because it is so fun.  Yesterday we were dreading them because of being cold and having the rain sting your eyeballs.  Even when we went into the R-Ranch we were saying.  I wish it were uphill the rest of the way.  Although it was not THAT cold, I just was not dressed for it.  My fingers and toes stayed numb and lily white most of the ride.

neal, i was the same way.  praying to make it through the downhills so i could get to the next climb.  it was an all around odd ride.

speaking of odd...did anybody else see the guy on the unicycle.  i saw him on the descent down Woody's.  if i didn't have a death grip on the bars, i would have taken a picture.

Epic conditions yesterday ... it will be a Six Gaps that Floridians talk about forever . Seriously, I did not realize just how many people from Florida drove up to the event. Literally 1/3 or better of the license plates were from Florida alone.

I saw him.  I rode with him just a bit and chatted.  I did not realize you were riding.  There was also a guy on a footboard/handlebar contraption.  I had seen him on other Six Gap rides.

Too bad you did not ride with us.  We had a good time even if it was cold for the way I was dressed.

Neal, i only did the 3 gap.  no way i could have suffered through the 6.  I saw that guy on the scooter too.  I saw him a couple of years ago as well.  he must have strong glutes to push himself up those hills!

Y'all are right, this was one to remember.  Especially since it was my first.  Funny thing is that my first triathlon was in the rain, so I guess you can blame me.  Can't believe the unicycle and scooter guys made it up and down the gaps.  Thanks to Neal and Sabra for riding with me out there.  It would have been miserable not knowing distances in that downpour.  Next year I'll have to tackle the six gaps (assuming I can get a hall pass).

Thirty minutes to climb Hogpen?!? ... ridiculous! As for mere mortals, Hogpen took an average Joe like me 50:17 and I am not sure that I would have shaved much time off of that if I could as Wolfpen was hard enough to do after that climb (24:38 for Wolfpen while the uber-cyclist did it in 19 minutes flat).

Total hats off to that guy.

Wade(the KOM winner) is a great young cyclist; he went from Cat 5 to a Belgian pro development team in just over a year.  Had a bad crash over there, recovered and came back here to the US.  He and his brother Wes have both kicked my tail numerous times.
