HumanVelocity - 2010-08-23 7:47 AM So far the 70.3 event is slated for the same weekend as Stumpy Creek and is set to be a point to point with a start at Blythe landind and finish at Davidson college.

As for the August time frame. Good luck with that. It usually is a suffer fest for training all through August. While I appreciate a good race with challenges, but not in my back yard. Why pay for the misery when we have to train in it all the time.

As for the Setup Events half, looks like it will be beginning of October timeframe. So wetsuit swim and a lot cooler temperatures.

Will keep you posted when I hear more.

Early August...even better!  LOL.   Now an October 70.3 @ Lake Norman would definately be on my todo list for next year.  I am done with the early fall marathons after this year and look forward to some more summer tri time next year!

Ugh.  These people are really going to clog up some good training roads, I bet.  Maybe I can be out of town that weekend.

HumanVelocity - 2010-08-23 11:04 AM The thing that kills me is that the Lake Norman Tri is in jeopardy of being cancelled next year because of the traffic issue it creates for 600-800 people for a few hours on a Saturday and Sunday morning.

But in comes the WTC and voila, they get the approvals, and by the way, we will be clogging up the roads from 7am to 3:30pm for maybe 2000-3000 people racing.

Got to love City council double standards.

For gods sake, LN Tri benefits the Outreach program for the community.

Agree, that's disappointing.  Especially if you consider the traffic impact is minimal.  The first swim wave starts at 7AM and the last at 7:35 (I think).  So, you have a super fast guy from the first wave out of the water, through T1, mount up and up to Hwy 115 at about 7:15 and the last guy from the last wave coming through at about 8:05 or so.  So, the traffic is stopped intermittently for less than an hour getting the triathletes onto Hwy 115 and there are no closed roads anywhere.  The car traffic passes by just like any other time, except there are just more cyclists to pass.  They do usually have a cop up on 115 and Midway Lakes stopping traffic as needed and at one spot on Jackson St.  I just don't see much impact on traffic, especially considering the amount of traffic on the road at 7-8AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  The run through the neighborhood behind the Y surely doesn't create any problems.  In fact, last year there were a lot of people out on the course cheering people on from their folding chairs on their front lawns.

I love doing my long rides early on the weekends specifically because the roads are almost empty.  Can't believe anyone is actually complaining about the tri traffic.  There is no question there are a hell of a lot more people doing the triathlon than driving anywhere at that time of the day on the weekend.

Sheesh.

Years ago I sent WTC an email suggesting Lake Norman for an IM location.  I had a swim, bike and run course already mapped out.  Blythe Landing in Huntersville would make a fantastic transition area!  Google map satellite it and you'll see a giant parking lot, several boat ramps for swim entry/exit, a nice feeder road for aid and even a long pier for officials/media during the swim.

I wonder if they're considering running with my idea and forgeting that I may have been the one to give them the idea?

I would rather do a "BigFuzzy Tri" at Lake Norman to support cancer research than a WTC 70.3 in August!

I raced Augusta last year because I used to live there.  But....I'm not going back there this year for the 70.3.  I am in the W30-34 AG and by the time I got to the bike course it was crazy congested.  So congested that I couldn't pass anyone because people were bussing up behind me and I could never get over to pass.  It was really frustrating.  I personally didn't think the bike course was safe at all.  And the beauty of it- I paid all that money to be in a race that had ZERO USAT marshalls on the course.  So of course that meant tons of people were drafting and cheating by forming really nice double pace lines.

Augusta was my first 70.3 event and I have zero desire to do another one.  All my other HIM's have been independent races which I prefer- I don't have a long time to wait for the swim start and the course isn't as congested.

And oh yeah- Augusta ran out of water on the run course last year.  I was ok but those who started later were impactd by it on the run course.

This year they upped the number of participants to 3,500 which is just insane to me.  The venue could barely handle the 3,000 athletes last year.  Though I did hear that it never sold out and there's about the same number competing as last year?

Anyhoo, if a 70.3 comes to Charlotte I probably won't do it. I like the independent races better.  You get more for your money and they are a lot cheaper too!

I am doing Augusta this year as my fiirst HIM. I AM in the last wave and being as the bike is my best of the three it should be interesting. There are between 2965-3100 people entered. That is a lot less than Nation's Tri (an Olympic in DC last weekend, almost 7000!)

I cannot compare since this will be my first WTC event. Having said that Setup Events puts on a great show and I will probably do the Washington 1/2 next year and maybe another independent. I have no sites set on a  full IM at this time.
