And now for something completely different...

In return for my wife and family's support for the previous three years' worth of racing and training, I've been on a "voluntary" triathlon hiatus for the 2010 season.  But, even after my maintenance program workouts, I've still been left with a lot of time on my hands.  So, what to do?

Well, how about optimizing a corner (about 15'x30' area) of our suburban backyard that had been occupied by an abandoned play structure and see-saw that our kids had outgrown? At least my wife thought (and me belatedly) that was a grand idea!

So, I put on my landscaping and construction hat this spring/summer and these are the fruits of my other-directed-triathlon energies...

(3) 4'x8' Raised Garden Beds, complete with Automated Sprinkler system.  Plumbing the copper runs to this area was a real learning experience!

A 6'x4' Chicken Coop, designed and built from ground up by yours truly.  Learned that a chop-saw saves a lot of time and heartache.  Also, learned to install a linoleum floor (not shown in this photo)

Of course, the structure had to match my wife's pre-existing garden/potting shed

And what coop is complete without a painted sign and flower box?

The coop's two newest tenants...4 months old...eggs expected in the next month or two

Great set up.  Quick question, why did you decide for such deep beds?  I planted a SFG last season and it was about 10" (or 12") deep, based on what seemed to be the recommended raised bed height.  This was my first attempt, so I'm by no means an expert.  Thanks.

Very nice!

I'm thinking about building some garden beds in the back portion of our yard. Keeping the deer out may turn out to be my hardest challenge.

Friggin.  Awesome.

We'd have chickens if they were allowed in our neighborhood, methinks.

Although we got some brown eggs from a friend and they didn't taste very good.   I really liked the ones from the store better.

And those raised beds are awesome.  Gardening without having to bend over is very cool!

Great job!

What kind of wood did you use for the bins?

The 2-foot raised beds were purposely built that way to ease my and my wife's aging backs!  That's all.

Everything was built out of redwood (con-hart rough).  We wanted to avoid anything painted, and so it was either redwood or cedar.  Here out West, redwood is more abundant than cedar.  Still pricey though.  The chicken coop is also built out of redwood for the most part.

When I was picking my salad this morning I was wishing my raised beds were higher -- maybe next year.

Wow, really nice.

Raised garden beds for my wife were a spring/summer project I didn't get around to this year. Still might build them this summer so they'll be ready for the spring.

I also looked into raising chickens and when I called the town to ask about it I was told it wasn't allowed because "those aren't standard pets.". Um...yeah. The neighbors are ok with it so we're probably just going to go ahead with it anyway.  I might hit you up for your chicken coop plans.

That's awesome! We live in Minneapolis and our neighbors have four chickens. We're often asked to be on chicken duty when they go out of town - sooo fun! Enjoy

Look up you town's Municipal Code yourself.  Half the time the drones at City Hall don't know squat and are wrong.  Most municipalities have a separate codes (from pets) covering "barnyard animals".

Else, don't keep any roosters and do as you please. Hush/bribe your neighbors with fresh, organic eggs!

Here's a sampling of my self-drawn plans...there were some changes (larger door opening for starters), but this was the basic structure.:

Same here.  I recall pigs, chickens and livestock being specifically noted in our development.  I don't believe it's law though so I don't know what anyone could do legally.  My thought was that I could simply fence in my back yard and nobody would know.
