I shave my head, but don't have much on the very top anyway, and am prone to sunburn. I (almost) always use sunscreen when I run and will wear a ball cap when just out and about in the sun. I do not like to wear a cap, even a technical cap, when I run. My head just feels too damn hot. I see plenty of guys and gals wearing hats out in the sun. Don't you get hot? Even when running in cold weather the last thing I add is a hat. I'll cover my ears but not my head unless it's really, really cold. If I run in the rain I may wear a tech cap but it invariably comes off a few miles in. I'd rather have the water in my face/eyes than the hat on. I should get a visor for the rain, but... how do you hat wearers stand it?

I will only wear the REI running caps.  They are just about as thin as you get on top.  I can tolerate it just fine unless it's very hot.  I've carried the darn thing for a few races...  But the shade protection helps me feel cool enough to balance the top coverage.  And I have pretty thick hair, too.

I think the REI running hat is much cooler than, for instance, a Headsweats hat.  It's the only hat I will wear, but I have tried others.

ETA:  The white one is my preference, feels cooler than a gray one I bought later.

I like it because it absorbs a lot of the sweat, which keeps the salt from running down into my eyes.  This summer has been especially bad because of the heat we've been having up here.  Sweating a lot more and have had issues with stinging eyes from sweat if I don't wear a hat.  I haven't had problems with overheating...though I only run in a technical hat.  Unfortunately, I don't have any words of wisdom for you...just what works for me!

ETA: I just tried it this summer (with the heat/sweat issue) and have only used my team's hat.  no real experience with headsweats or others.  It's white and made out of thin material so that may help!

Visor in the Summer, Running skully in the winter, always!  I'm a sweater, need something to divert the flow, my eyebrows alone aren't up to the task!

I'm the same way.  My head gets hot, and it makes me miserable.  I'm usually wanting to rip my helmet off halfway through a bike ride in the heat.  I wear visors when running. Keeps the sun off my face and out of my eyes, but doesnt make me miserable.

like you i have no hair, and i wear this so my head doesn't burn off.

its paper thin and white.

i'd much rather have the sun hitting that than my bare skin with the amount i'm outside.

My hair is dark brown - which makes my head get really hot in the sun.  And I have the beginnings of a bald spot that tends to burn.

So I wear a white Pearl Izumi hat made from some sort of tech/mesh material.  Very thin so it lets heat out - but the white color helps keep my head from overheating...

I actually never wore running caps --- until this summer (which is crazy because it's the hottest and most humid summer we've had since I started training five or six years ago). I find it helps -- it helps keep the sweat from running down the face, helps keep the sun off my head a bit more, and it keeps my ponytail off my neck.

I just wear the cap I was given at IMLP.

I wear both hats and visors during the summer. I do like my REI one and absolutely have to have white in the summer.  I do, however, have a lot of hair and part of the function for me is to help hoist it off my neck during hot runs and I'm not sure that a thin piece of fabric really makes a difference on top of my head.  I do actually like having it up there though when I douse my head in water as it seems to hold the moisture a bit longer than just the hair and help to cool me.  I also feel like the brim helps to reduce the sun on my face which makes me feel cooler.

No hat when I run but headsweats under my helmet when I ride.  I find it keeps my hair from getting tangled even thought its braided.  I have enough hair that the addition of a little bit of fabric isn't going to make much difference in heat retention.

I wear a hat to keep the sweat out of my eyes.  I don't find I get any hotter with it on as long as it is a thin hat with some breath-ability.

I've got a really thin, white, tech hat that I always wear. I'm the hot and sweaty sort, and I like keeping the sun off my head. As someone else stated, it keeps the sweat down for a while.

The sun is not your friend.

I grew up playing catcher on traveling baseball teams in Texas so I guess it just doesn't phase me.  MLB style wool hat backwards FTW.

Never thought about it much...I wear a cap 100% of the time on runs.  I guess it's to do with living in SoCal and not really wanting a sunburned part in my hair.  (That and not liking sweat in my eyes.)  Never really liked visors...just seem like hats without the benefit of protecting your scalp.  I have a couple Brooks running hats I like a lot, but the Headsweats washable caps are great.  I have a Nike cap I got at one of their "Run Hit Wonder" races that I like for rainy runs.

I usually wear a hat when I'm running.  I do feel cooler without it but during a race you can dump water on your head so it's not so bad.

I have dark brown hair and a white hat keeps my head cooler in addition to keeping the sweat out of my eyes. I've tried a visor and a headband, but they don't help keep my head cool the way a hat does.

In the winter a hat helps keep my head warm. When it's really cold I'll wear a knit hat instead of a ball cap.

We're all different!

xwhatever on the white hat. I have a couple that I have gotten from races that have been great. I tend to only wear them in races and on longer runs.  Sometimes it's hot, but if I take it off, it's not that much cooler and I get more sweat in my eyes.

I def vote for headsweats products as well!

I almost always wear a hat.  Usually they are dark colors, but mesh, so I don't really get hot.

I remember seeing Mark Allen wear one in Hawaii and thought if it works for him, it must be the right thing to do.  I have tried to wear a hat and it just gets hot and bothersome after about 10 mins.  Kept trying, long hair, short hair, buzz cut still hot.  A visor is not too bad but most of the time I end up with it backwards which defeats the purpose of keeping the sun off my face.

The hat actually keeps me from getting too hot.  I have thick black hair and I guess black absorbs more heat?
I don't mind wearing a hat and during my college days I wear a baseball cap every day.

I will sometimes wear my old UA skull cap.  I wore it when I had a shaved head and was still playing football, just to keep a little barrier between my skin and the inside of the helmet.

Occasionally I'll rock a sweet head band too.  I figure if I'm wearing the Richard Simmons short shorts, I might as well add the head band.

I have black or red hats. Never have much issue. Sometimes I wear them, sometimes I don't.

It's a far sight better than other headgear I've worn. And I didn't have a choice for those.

I always wear a hat but I'm used to it from years of playing baseball.  I'm convinced that the hat keeps my head cooler than it would be baking in the sun.

Fit is everything.  If you just throw any old hat on your head you probably hate wearing it.  Too loose and it will slip down your head and put pressure on your ears/eyes that can lead to headaches.  Too tight and obviously you get brain squeez.

You have to take into account the depth of the cap also.  I have a head shape that makes 90% of hats to "tall" for my so I have to really search to find one that gives me a decent fit.

I cannot tell you why I can do it but I would rather run in a white Pearl Izumi tech hat or I have a headsweats hat (also white) that I got from a recent Tri that I have been working in but they are great.  I sweat sooooooo much that I need something to keep it (and the sunscreen) out of my eyes.

Like you not being able to run with one, I cannot run without one.

I had a red one and retired it because it was too hot.  Try white.
