newbz - 2010-08-27 11:22 AM dooooo it for those that have done it before, whats the course like? overall competition?

Even though I live so close (less than a 15 min drive from home), I've never done this race, but I've ridden the bike course more times than I can count.  The roads are smooth, and there are really only 2 significant hills.  The first is not too far out of transition, and it comes right after you turn off of Alpine road, so it hits you with no warning.  You want to make sure you're in a low gear before you make the turn.  The second hill is shortly after you make the right at the light in Rossville.  You'll go about 1/4-1/2 mile and cross over a bridge at the upper end of the lake just as the climb starts.  Most people think the Camp Area Road hill is harder, but this is the one that kicks my butt for some reason.

I haven't done the run course, because if I run at the park, it's usually on the other side of the lake from transition.

The only bad part about the swim is the water quality.  It is truly nasty.  The visibility is zero.  You can't see your hand when your arm is stretched out in front of you swimming.

Looking at last year's results, this has either been a small event in the past, or they don't post all the results online.  Looking at podium times in my AG, I would normally have a serious shot at my first podium, but with larger training volume right now and all the fatigue that comes with it, I have no idea what kind of performance I'll be able to put up.  With your speed, you may have a chance for an overall win.

thanks for the info,

this looks like a course made me for me, longer swim, some hills on a longer bike, and a short fast run!

It should be fun, will be racing on my training wheels/tires (its all in your head anyway right?), and should be a fun time all around. No real goals/plans for the race, in the middle of a lower volume HIGH intensity block so i have NO IDEA how my legs will feel.

I almost forgot - newbz gets the sportsmanship award for stopping to help the woman who crashed. Even though he was contending for the overall podium, he dnf'd. Way to look out for other participants!

TriMyBest - 2010-08-29 6:52 PM Congratulations James! 3rd overall! Great job!

Thanks Don but my 3rd OA was basically by default.  There were 2 much faster guys ahead of me.  Jacob I think that is his name was involved in a crash and David (newbz) stopped to help.  These guys are fast runners and I would have never caught them.  David deserver a lot of credit for stopping to help.

No matter how you look at it, you were still faster than all the rest of us.

Is that you at #33? Except for my weakness at swimming, the numbers were pretty close on the bike and run.

And David, I was wondering why you weren't on the results. Way to go! I see your a coach also. We should talk; Im at the point where I think I need someone to tell me what to do so I can get the most out of my training since my tri times are either the same for each event from year to year, or getting slightly slower.

KellyJean - Congrats!

Nick - Yeah, that's me at 33rd male.  It wasn't my fastest race, but all things considered, I'm happy with the results.
