Back of the pack breathing hard
Subject: Swimming and Neck/Back Pain!!??
Hi,

Man am I in pain!! Wow. Maybe some of you can figure out what went wrong.
I did my first Tri a week ago, Lake Lenape NJ. I felt great!! Up the that
point I was running, riding and swimming on a somewhat regular basis.
The swimming was all pool and lake and the canal on back of bay house.

I live in central Jersey on the shore. The ocean temps are finally getting warm
enough for me. Went for a swim and decided to swim between gaurd
stations and back again during high tide. Few swells, no waves. Felt good.
About 15 mins.

This morning I woke and couldn't barely move my head to the right and up
without lots of pain going from neck down middle of upper back just to the
right of my spine. Was bed/couch ridden for whole day.

1. Was it poor technique? Out of shape? Waves?
2. What can I do for this muscle pain? Heat/Cold/????

It's stopping me from doing riding or running.

T

Do you breathe bilaterally?  My preference is to breathe only to the left and I notice that after 1000 yards or so my neck becomes strained.  It's finally forcing me to alternate my breathing.

I really only breath to the right side. I'm very comfortable in the water. This just suprised me.
I've never ever had muscle problems from swimming. I give alternately a try.

My neck hurts me when I don't swim with my face totally in the water...like if I'm picking it up to sight too often.

I had this problem, it comes from breathing to one side. You must alternate breathing, either shift every lap, or every 3 strokes whatever, but you must balance out your breathing. I asked exactly the same question on this forum and somebody else piped in, said the same thing...mine has gone away but I force myself to breath on both sides......I used ice and ibuprofen for the pain, it helped.....

Ditto on the above, my neck pain got so bad I have been seeing a chiropractor lately, and it has really helped.  But he told me the same thing, breathing on one side (my right) forces my left back/neck to compensate.  Needless to say, I have been working more and more on bilateral breathing.

My chiro has me on a twice a week schedule right now, one day adjustment, one day sports massage.  Sweet thing it, I have my insurance covering a GREAT massage every week!

Just a note. You don't need to breathe bilatterally to avoid neck pain. You probably just need to swim more to get your neck used to the activity. It's better to get used to swimming a certain way, train your body to do it, than to force yourself to do something you don't like because you had a fluke pain. Your pain probably came from lifting your head to sight, and not from breathing, as you shouldn't lift your head in any way to do that. I would be suspect of any doctor, or chiroprctor that said otherwise. Probably need to pay the bills.
