Veteran 207 Rochester, MN | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains Hello Penn Triathletes, The Ironman 70.3 Pocono has peaked my interest for a number of reasons. I am a bit concerned about registering for a race without seeing the course maps. I have done some research based on information in this thread. Seems like a nice area to do a race, but the date of the event seems a bit sketchy from a temperature point of view. I live in Minnesota and we do a race in May in Albert Lea that has pretty cold water. I am wondering what the water temperature of the river was on Oct 2nd this year? Do any of you have details? Bill in Rochester, Minnesota Weather around here is always a question mark but even more so this time of year. This year it was pretty cool by then however we could easily be in the 70's still. As for the water, It is really just a Delaware river swim so it can change very quickly due to rain fall and temps. I don't really think this is a great time of year for a race but I'm gonna do it. We'll see.......... Here is a link to the area: http://www.nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/weather.htm Here is a historical weather site for the gap: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/weather-history/18327/2007/10/04/ |

Bill in Rochester, Minnesota Based on the mean avg they have for Oct. = 53.6deg -being end of Sept - I would venture to say anywhwere from 59 to 64deg. my nums are based on the link below- http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/monthly?referred_module=sw&site_no=01427510&por_01427510_3=1049420,00010,3,1975-06,2009-09&start_dt=2006-09&end_dt=2009-09&format=html_table&date_format=MM/DD/YYYY&rdb_compression=file&submitted_form=parameter_selection_list thomas |

Would be nice if they would update their website sometime and have the course maps on! I must say that for an MDot branded event they need to get their S**t together. The site hasn't been updated in quite a while. I would really like to see the courses. I know MDOT races are more money they are usually top notch otherwise. We'll see.... |

Expert 668 Lancaster, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains I wrote an email to Ironman and here is what they responded. Thanks for your inquiry. We're pleased that the race is well over 50% full as of this time. We appreciate everyone's patience as we get all permits, etc. finalized by the multitude of municipalities that are involved in hosting the event. It is an arduous and bureaucratic process but we are well ahead of most first year events and expect that the final permits will be completed shortly. Once complete we can then post all course maps. Veteran 207 Rochester, MN | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains Hello Everyone, I first want to thank Golfpro for contacting the race organizers. It is now Jan 2011 and still the race site seems to look just like it did 4 months ago. Putting my Race Director hat on now (I am a USAT Certified Race Director, having directed a number of 700+ participant triathlons), I have to be a bit critical of the race organizer for this event. I, personally, would not open registration or even start the website for the event until I had all of the information, permits, etc in place. It is called Due Diligence. Do the proper preparation for the event. I will never register for an event without understanding what the course looks like. They should have information about water temperature, weather, elevation profiles, and more details. Even though the event is an Ironman 70.3, I am holding off until I see those maps. Hopefully, they will have more information soon. Take care, Bill |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains I checked out Smithfield Beach on the satellite -- with a rectangle swim, I'm guessing close to half the swim will be with the current and the other half against the current? This swim looks it will be an interesting set-up. The multiple transitions (9 miles apart) is another question mark I have in my mind. Granted, I did Ironman Rhode Island in it's inagural year, 2008, and the event was flawless with two transitions half a state apart!! I'm more concerned of the logistics of getting the family to the swim 5 miles from the hotel, then how they will get to the finish several more miles away in downtown Stroudsburg. And then how we will all get back to the hotel without being on the race course. I'm not signing up till I see some course maps |

Regular 143 Collegeville, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains I'm still using a dumb phone that doesn't take very good pics, or I would have :-/ Swim looks flat....bike has one big climb and the rest could be described as rolling. Run has what looks like a gentle upwards slope until about mile 6 where there is a small mountain, then returns gently downwards back to the finish. |

But was it a single out and back, or a giant rectangle?? |

Interesting set-up. Maybe the map isn't sized properly?? |

WTH? I just mapped it on Map My Run, .41 miles from shoreline to shoreline. http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/29285904 Even extending it out to the transition area, if you want to count that, got like .7 mi Could they missing a leg or something? |
