I was reading some posts earlier and people were talking about finishing in the "alloted time". What is that exactly and do they cut you off if you are not in by a certain time and give you a DNF?

It's my understanding that HIM and IM races will usually have a cutoff time, not only for the entire race but for each leg of the race as well.  I have seen that some IM races have two cutoff times for the bike, one a certain number of miles in and another for completing the bike portion.  The FAQ on the race website should have specifics.

There are normally cut off times for finishing the swim, bike, and the overall race.  If you don't meet those cutoff times, you are pulled off the course and given an DNF.

...And depending on the race (and how its courses are laid out), there may be internal cutoffs within the bike or the run.  You might have to have started the last loop on the bike course or the run course by a certain time or they'll pull you.  Friend of ours, for instance, got pulled from the IM Arizona run course when she missed the cutoff time for the start of the last of three loops, 15+ hours into her day.

Then again, you can get your timing chip pulled and your day ended right quick--after less than 2 1/2 hours--if you don't make the swim cutoff.

But the big one is that for most iron distance races you start at 7:00am and have to finish by midnight...17 hours.  There are usually overall finishing cutoff times for half iron races as well.

As per the answers above.

It varies from race to race. Most races--bike swim car run kayak whatever, of any distance, have time limits. Depending on the race, they may pull you off the course, OR you can continue but they will take your bib and chip (basically making you an ordinary rider or pedestrian).

Each iron distance race and half-iron sets its own limits as well: not every iron race has a 17-hour time limit (although I don't know of any that allow MORE time, just less), and some races have informal leeway ... they may post an 8-hour time limit, for example, but actually let people finish up to 9 hours or so.

Best to make sure whatever the race, you can make it WELL within the time limits, including spare time for flats, rest, taking care of minor injuries, etc.
