Pre-race routine:

Ate eggos and coffee. Got to T early so had plenty of time to talk to people and meet up with other BTers.
Event warmup:

Swam a little (~250) to work out any morning kinks and to get adjusted to the water.
Swim
  • 16m 48s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt good. Stayed near front until I got nailed in the face by a frog kicker. Alan was stuck on my hip the 1st leg and then drifted off.

I had a great swim with no cramps and my sighting was done off others.
What would you do differently?:

Control my breathing a bit

Workout my back more
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

The run from the swim was SO muddy! I slipped many times and was muddy and grassy by the time i got to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Quicker
Bike
  • 48m 10s
  • 17 miles
  • 21.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent ride. Popped a gel in the beginning mile. I got passed a couple times. Mainly on the hills, (*cough* Bill*cough*) was semi-quick and lagged in the climbing. There was some nice headwind on the last 1/3 of the course...I had a bit of crosswind too as I was leaning into it and could tell i was sporting the Kona lean. I kept my cadence high and stayed in aero as best I could to keep speed- the trade off was that I couldnt reach my bottles. I'm considering the never reach type of hydration system....we'll see. popped another gel nearing dismount.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice riding more hills at race pace.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

dismount was good..I heard Bill shouting at be at the line as he kicked off into the distance. I lost some time fumbling with my socks. Alan then appeared right behind me shouting at me to get my ass out of T2.
Run
  • 29m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

I hate hills, I hate hills and I hate trails....
Post race
Warm down:

Coke and water.

Event comments:

I like this race. It is very challenging but the thing I hate are the trail runs...I just cant do them well.

Course: Trail run. HATE IT! I had such a great swim and bike that when I got to the run, I choked in performance! I gave trot and got into my groove...the legs were tight. I feel like I didn't loosen them up enough in the closing miles of the bike. My calfs solidified. I had to stop and stretch out...Alan passed me- I chased. I kept up with him for a good 1.5 miles and then the trail bit me hard. The roots and uneven surface took its toll and I was slowing. My ankles were semi rollin on each step- I felt like i needed more ankle supportive shoes to really get on it. Alan soon was no where to be seen. Runners began passing me like no tomorrow...I tried to pull it together...but i thought to myself- I could go crazy and get hurt for nations tri/ augusta or just run my best I could for the race. The GOOD thing is I had no side cramps!!! woohoo...whatever i did i need to keep doing.

Great race Scottie! I loved the trail run... it's the only place I was even close to your speed. It was a lot of fun doing a race with so many other fellow BTers.

Killer race man.  Great execution on the swim, bike, AND run.  To get better at trail runs, you've gotta embrace them.  Come run in Umstead with me, and we will make a trail lover out of you.

Well done.
