Sunny
Total Time = 1h 42m 55s
Overall Rank = 800/2761
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 192/463
Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep much. Got up at 3 for some unknown reason. Packed up....drove to Aurora

Had a caffeinated gel just before the swim

Met up with the BT crew....and it was cool to meet people I hadn't met before!
Event warmup:

got in the water for a short swim.
Swim
  • 23m 19s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

FREAKIN' SWIMMING....ugh. I could NOT get a good rhythm going. Not sure if the caffeinated gel had anything to do with it, or if I just need more OWS practice, or what. But geez, I need to be faster!

What would you do differently?:

practice more OWS and not try a new gel with caffeine in a race (duh)
Transition 1
  • 04m 21s
Comments:

So I'm jogging with my bike in the transition area and I get yelled at for running. They say, "there's no running with bikes in the transition area." WHAT? are you kidding?

The boat ramp REALLY hurts the feet, and the freakin chip seal in the parking lot isn't much better!

The transition area is HUGE with almost 3K people in it. Unreal
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting some good callouses on my feet. :)
Bike
  • 41m 3s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 18.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Too many people. Going up the hills, there was lots of weaving. Worried about hitting someone on several occasions!

Fun ride though
What would you do differently?:

just drink more.
Transition 2
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

Good transition, even though I was again yelled at for jogging with my bike. ;) (is this a triathlon or not?)
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 30m 56s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run. I forgot that there are actually hills on the run course. I had thought it was pretty flat, but it wasn't. :)
What would you do differently?:

just run faster
Post race
Warm down:

huh, I always get so wrapped up in talking to people after the race, that I forget to cool down. Found markdills38 and his wife (she was easy to spot since we were both wearing Javelin stuff). Hung out with Stacers and her husband, and Macdaddy while Tara went wild at the playground.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

SWIMMING! MUST GET FASTER AT SWIMMING!

Event comments:

Too big of a race. It's crazy! I do this race b/c I talk people into doing it as their first tri. Several of my coworkers did this race and did great! But I don't think I'd do it again, unless I've persuaded someone to do it! You HAVE to be there by 6:30 (spectators included) and you CAN'T leave until 11 at the earliest. Then you have to walk your bike 1.5 miles to your car and then get stuck in a traffic jam for about 45 minutes b/c there's only one road. The logistics are tough. Anyway, it's a fun race, but just a long day. :)

Sorry the day was so long. Great overall job on the tri. NO running in the transition area...whats up with that? I look forward to that part, makes me feel like a pro :-). Keep up the good training for your next race. I am with you on becoming a faster swimmer!

Great job, what's the deal with no running, did they hire some high school hall monitors as marshalls?

Seems like both of us had some similar problems, tenderfeet off of the swim, not drinking enough on the bikes..probably would have traded you some of your hills for the 100 degree plus heat index we had though..

Oh well, again, great job!

Wow - 2,761 athletic women all in one place? I knew I should've blown off that finance project and shown up there! Sorry to hear it didn't go as well as you would've liked; I can see how it might get claustrophic out there on the bike too. Good job of sticking with it and fighting back after a swim you weren't happy with though.

But good job braving it again girlfriend. Looks like before our bike rides we're going swimming in Boulder res? Talk to you soon. O.

Great job Cathy!  I'm with you on the swimming thing - we've got time for plenty of OWS at Boulder Res the remainder of this year if you're up for it.

Congrats Cathy.

No running during transition?  Is that like "there's no crying in baseball?"

Way to go Cathy!  Nice race--even if you weren't happy with the swim.

Nice job fighting through the throngs on the bike.  Alomst 3,000 people on a 12mi bike course--yikes!

I don't even know what to say about being warned for running with your bike.  What the...?!?!

Way to go, Cathy!  Sounds like your happy with the result, given the GIANT crowd. At least you didn't get busted for drafting as you made your way through the weavers (take note, Coredump.).  The training volume is really paying off...

And I'm sure that I'm going to spectate the next Danskin event, whenever, wherever it is...

Nice job Cathy!  You really smoked that bike course - way to go!!!  What I would give to do 18+ mph on a course that hilly!

I'm still annoyed at the whole no running in transition thing too - it just kills the adrenaline to have to stop and WALK.  At least you guys didn't have as much of a parkign fiasco this year!

It was good to see you yesterday and hang out with you guys after the race!

Great race, Cathy! I still can't believe they make you walk through transition - that's the problem with races that cater to beginners, which you definitely are NOT. But I admire you doing the race to support your friends who you encouraged to enter. That's so nice! Sounds like a zoo though.

Heck, why spectate when you can participate!  I'd love to be the only dude among 2,700 hardbodied women.  Do you think they'll let me in next year?

By the way, great race!

Way to go, chica!!!!

You rebel....running with your bike in the transition area .   Never heard of that before...weird.

You crack me up taking a caffeine gel and you don't even drink coffee! (and I believe you are generally caffeine free otherwise? )  I remember last year at Peterborough I decided to drink coffee prior to the race (wasn't drinking it regularly then) and then almost chucked on the bike. Why do we get these brilliant ideas on race day?

Great work!

First, great meeting you! Love the pigtails!  Second, great race. You did an awesome job!  I agree with the bike being crazy with too many people. I don't think I'll do that one again. And no running in t-zone was ridiculous. Thankfully, my t-spot was only about 2 racks from the bike finish/run start.

Funny comment about the caffienne gel. I haven't drank ANY caffiene since 1997.  None...I quit a huge addiction then cold-turkey and have never gone back. At the race, I did 2 caffienated gel shots..maybe that's what kicked my bike into gear!

Great job Cathy! I can understand the rule that says "No running of lawnmowers, weed whackers or chain saws in the transitions area," but no running athletes??? WTF?

way to go! I did 2 danskins this year, and had the same frustrations. Loved being out there with so many excited people, hated the chaos and "rules"

Great bike ride with teh hills and wind, wahoo!
