Pre-race routine:

Pre-rode the course with Jon late Saturday morning. VERY hot. Not too technical, but hard to maintain high speeds. Definitely not going to ride the single speed.
Event warmup:

Swam out to the last turn buoy and back to shore.
Swim
  • 13m 54s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Surf was a bit lower than it had been on Saturday, thankfully. The wave start was just out of the general milling-about crowd on the beach, so probably 100 yards wide for less than 100 people. No crowding, and I only ran into one guy who was headed...I'm not sure where he was headed, but it wasn't toward the turn buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. My best swim yet.
Transition 1
  • 04m 16s
Comments:

This was about a quarter-mile run up from the beach into transition. Transitioned faster than everyone else around me. Realized I had forgotten to hook the chest strap for my Camelbak, and it took forever to get it clipped with my gloves on.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure Camelbak is ready to go before putting on gloves.
Bike
  • 1h 50m 17s
  • 13 miles
  • 7.07 mile/hr
Comments:

The first half of the first lap went really well, and I was only getting passed by the really gonzo riders who don't swim well. Then I overheated, and it was miserable from there. Lap 1 approx 32 minutes, Lap 2 approx 40 minutes, Lap 3 approx 38 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Pick a race that isn't in the middle of summer.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No separate timing for transitions, and I forgot to hit my watch. Probably about 30 seconds, as all I had to do was rack my bike and drop the Camelbak.
Run
  • 41m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I was already cooked when the run started, so I was surprised it went this well. Managed to run at least half of it. On fresh legs and/or in cooler weather, this would easily be a sub 30-minute run.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some Gatorade from the aid station and walked back to the water to hang out in the surf and cool down.

Event comments:

This would be a spectacular race in March or November. It's reasonably well run and the trails are decent. In fact, much nicer than I had anticipated. However, holding it in July just ruined the fun for me. It would also be nice to see chip timing.
