TDS Pewaukee Triathlon - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log
Pewaukee, Wisconsin
United States
72F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 25m 39s
Overall Rank = 214/595
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 53/123
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5, out the door at 5:30. Power bar and water on the way.
Event warmup:

For once I got to the race relatively early. Got body marked, got my time chip, set up transition, stretched, went for a short run, went for a short swim and got set to race.
Swim
  • 06m 49s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was the shortest race swim I've ever done, so my strategy was to attack it early. I started at the front and inside of the pack. It worked well. I caught people from the two waves ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

I got my new bike on Saturday afternoon, so I had a total of about 40 minutes experience with clipless pedals. It is almost impossible to run with the cleets on and I took my time getting into the pedals. In addition, the transition area was a long way from the beach, which contributed to a slow T1. On the whole it was ok though.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to leave the shoes attached to the pedals and slip in while riding.
Bike
  • 47m 3s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.13 mile/hr
Comments:

This was literally the first ride of more than 1 mile I had on my new tri bike. What a difference good gear makes! I rode this course on my Fuji league last weekend and averaged 16.5 MPH. I decided to attack the bike course and see what I had left on the run. It worked really well. For the first time ever I passed alot of people on the bike. (I was passed as well, but it looked like hard core types) I was VERY happy with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Get use to the new bike. Work on cornering and climbing faster. More time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

I was worried about clipping out, so I took my time. Then, I took the bike to the wrong rack. (Stupid on my part) Once I got to the rack, the rest of the transition went fine.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to take my feet out of the bike shoees while riding.
Run
  • 25m
  • 3.2 miles
  • 07m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

The heat and hills in the first 1.5 mile hurt me. On the whole this run was fine though considering the conditions
What would you do differently?:

Race someplace where it isn't 100 degrees. (You would think Wisconsin would qualify)
Post race
Warm down:

Jumped in the lake to bring the body temp down. Gatorade, water and oranges.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat - Heat - Heat on the run

Event comments:

Fun race. The organizers did a good job despite having more racers than anticipated.

I had the run course twice prior to the race and sunday was by far the hottest day, I suppose its good that it didnt really heat up to much until the run but man if it didnt make the run hell.

The first half was bad - a fair number of hills combined with the heat mad it less than fun. Once it leveled off I was ok.
