Total Time = 2h 49m 16s
Overall Rank = 43/156
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 7/16
Pre-race routine:

Overslept a little. Was out of bed at 4:36 and on the road by 5:15. Traffic was light and I arrived at Ft Ritchie by 5:50. I had a bagel and a half a bottle of Gatorade on my way to the race. I ate 2 Fig Newmans and sipped on some water while setting up. I planned on wearing a wetsuit but after putting my feet in the water I decided to go without it. I think it was a good decision even though I could have used the help.

Event warmup:

A little jogging to my car and back. I wish I had more time but I ended up helping out someone that had a flat and did not know how to change a tire.
Swim
  • 32m 45s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

Slow swim but it is to be expected with how little time I spend in the pool. I did struggle the first 200m with all of the bodies. That was the most bumping I have experienced in any race. As usual, I was really winded by the end of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more and build my fitness so I can be out in front of the cluster
Transition 1
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Very good T1 (3rd fastest overall non-open). Having my shoes already clipped in helped make it a fast transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 24m 42s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 17.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs never came around on this ride. The early climbs were killers for me. I dropped my chain after the turn off of 491. I coasted for a few hundred yards trying to get it back on the chain ring. With no luck I had to pull over and lose all of my momentum. I caught back up to a few people that past me but could catch the guys that were with me when I dropped the chain. Road were rough in the valley so I rode in the middle of the lane most of the time. While climbing 491 I heard a weird noise coming from my bike. Again, I pulled over and adjusted my rear wheel and brake.
My bike split was bad and though the mechanical issues were unfortunate, they cost me 1-2 minutes at most. My poor split is again due to lack of training
What would you do differently?:

Ride more and maybe try some swim to bike workouts to train my legs to get the blood flowing more quickly.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Got my feet out of my shoes while coasting down the hill just outside the Fort. Overall, a good T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 50m 6s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I was disappointed with 8:04/mile but with a rank of 24th overall (non-open) I cannot be too upset. Without being very fit, the swim and the bike took it's toll on me so I am pleased with my performance. Also, the course was much tougher than I expected.

What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Forgot to bring some recoverite so I got some food and water right away. It was great having showers at the rec center.

Course: Gradual climb just outside of the Ft. It flattens out for a short distance and then a steep but fairly short climb. This takes you to a very fast and long down hill (491). Towards the bottom of the hill you need to break for a right turn to a loop with some rollers. Back out to 491 and continue in the same direction for a mile. Make a Uturn and climb the huge hill.
