Expert 1461 Sarnia, Ontario | Subject: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire So the tread about the gator skins got me thinking. How many miles do you normalls get on a set of tires? I have the factory tires that came on my Specialized Allez and have aver 2200 kms and over 40 trainer hours on them. I (knock on wood) have never had a flat. I have a HIM coming up in a month and am thinking that maybe it would be a good idea to have a fresh set of rubber on the bike. I want to get a couple more weeks out of these tires and then switch to the new ones for a couple of weeks... NNORD... So what are the best tires for training and racing, the Gatorskins seem to be highly recomended but I read good things about the michelins and the Vitoria... Guess I am going to turn this into a poll... What says BT? |

Master 2404 Redlands, CA | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire I use the Pro Race 3, mainly because I saw a study on ST a few years back that it had the lowest rolling resistance; I haven't tried the others but the Pro Race 3 has worked well for me. Its tough to really gage this, because I doubt any have tried all those tires. Most stick to 1 tire. |

I think the 2's are better. I think they corner better and they are easier to change. Michelin must have done something to the beads because the 3's take longer. I have about 8 of the Pro Race 2's and I hope I can make them last since they don't make them anymore. When I find a tire I like I try to buy them in bulk at a cheaper rate and just in case they quickly get discontinued. |

Master 1795 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire I have trained/raced of GP 4000's for about 2+ years. Have been sold a few times on Pro 3's being faster, but the continentals have never failed me and that says a lot in regards to flats, wear and tear etc. We are creatures of habbit so I doubtful someone has experience with multiple tires. Glad to see I am not alone in my choice though. Didn't knwo they were that in favor. |

I think the 2's are better. I've heard (many times over) that Michelin has moved the production of many of its bike tires to Asia from France and that quality has suffered. |

Regular 55 | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire Speaking of GP4000s. They are on sale at sierra trading post right now for $36 bucks a tire. You have to be on their 'deal flyer mailing list' to get the mark down. That is the lowest price I have seen them anywhere. Sierratradingpost.com |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire Another vote for the Pro 3's. I agree that they seem harder to get on than the Pro 2's, but I use them every day and they've been great. Only flats I've had were stuff that would have punctured just about any tire. As for speed, in the rolling resistance tests over at biketechreview.com, the worst Pro 2 and Pro 3 tests came out better than the best GP 4000S test. |

Veteran 174 Southern New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire I'm looking for tires too so I'm glad I came across this thread. My LBS strongly recommended the GP4000's and their price is $44/tire. The Michelin's also seem very good. |

Pro 5892 , New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire I put about 6000 miles on my Conti GP4000S last year without a single flat and they're still look very good... they're good enough that I sold off my tubular race wheels and just use my clinchers instead, so they handle and feel great in addition to being very reliable. |

Expert 1461 Sarnia, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire Great feedback everyone, just what I am looking for, lots of opinions good and bad. after the gatorskin thread I am surprised to so so few votes for them. I looked at my tires really close and they look fine, but they have no tread pattern so I dont know how thin they are, do not want to deal with a flat on race day. |

Expert 1007 NW NJ | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire I love the timelyness of some threads on BT, always seems to address something that's on my mind! So I've been running Mich Pro Race 3 for over a year now and I've had the sidewalls on 2 different tires puncture to the point where the tube bubbles through, and now I have a serious worn out section on the rear tire, after a skidout with a close encounter with a driver that didn't feel that he needed to look both ways. Basically the grey tread is gone and there is red ( I run red tires) showing through. I feel I will need to replace this tire before my HIM in early Sept. So After about 1500 miles, I've had to replace 3 tires. I'm looking for greener pastures. |

I looked at my tires really close and they look fine, but they have no tread pattern so I dont know how thin they are, do not want to deal with a flat on race day. After you pump your tires up to normal pressure (120ish), look straight down at your back tire. If there's still a curve in the middle of the tire you should be okay. If it's flat, it's time to pay attention. Also under a strong light, look closely at the tire itself. You're going to have little cuts all over the tire, that's not all that odd. If there are any that are larger than a dent and/or all the way through it's time to get new tires. If you have a small cut in a new tire you can fill it with super glue and that'll last quite a while. Small cuts and tears in the tire collect small stone or pieces of glass which then poke the tube at the most inopportune times and give you that slow flat thing going on that makes the wheel feel mushy after a while but doesn't go flat all at once. |

Master 1927 Guilford, CT | Subject: RE: Tire Poll - Best alround race/train tire I had butyl tubes with the conti 4000 for a couple thousand miles. They were good. I never did quite like the feel of them compared to some other stuff I had ridden on. I switched to latex tubes and the Vittoria Open Evo Corsa....like the feel a lot better. It's noticeable. From the last table I saw it looks like I pick up a few watts of effort too. Had them for a few hundred miles and sticking with them. http://www.industrializedcyclist.com/tiretest.pdf |

No issues switching the pr3s after the first few times, I don't even use a tire-iron putting them back on. |

Thanks for this, I checked and the back has a noticeable flat area, worse that the front by far, probably to do with the trainer... looks like time for a trip to the LBS and the majority is saying gp4000 so I will check into them... |

Not necessarily the trainer, although the tire will wear out faster there. That flat area will show up even with 100% road riding. (edit) oh, look for GP4000s tires. Yes, there's a difference.
