Subject: What are the odds....Shark!
So a single white shark was cited (and beaches closed) about 5 miles from where I am vacationing. I am just getting comfortable in the ocean (Im a freshwater lake guy)- I know the odds are LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG... but I cant help but worry that I look like a seal!

Reassure me that Im not this shark's breakfast plans for tomorrow!

You're not breakfast.

That shark was just loitering, no worries.

Who exactly has the jurisdiction to write a ticket for a shark?  And what was it charged with?

Chances are it didn't pay the fine (they rarely do), and now has a warrant out, so it wouldn't want to be seen near the beach again.  You'll be fine.  Unless it's personal.

Breakfast?  Doubt it.  Sharks tend to feed at dusk.

I'm with faded_memories here... how do you cite a shark? Do they carry ID? Cuz I'm pretty sure the shark would lie about their identity. "Who me? I'm not a great white... I'm a dolphin... what do you mean this is a restricted area and I'm not allowed? Didn't you hear me? I'm a DOLPHIN, everyone loves Flipper. I certainly did, he was delicious. Oh, crap."

You boys and your arguments over "length"... we all know that if you said it's a 25 footer, it's probably a minnow!

I read that world wide, sharks kill about 10 people per year and people kill about 100 million sharks per year. So if a shark eats you, it's karma.

Also, if a shark eats you you have improved the odds for the rest of us by 10%. Thanks!

I've surfed there a few times as well, thankfully I saw this video after and not before.

We have a bit of a grudge ever since the U.S.S. Indianapolis incident.

In the 20th century there were 108 reported attacks, with September being the month with the most attacks and August & October following close.

http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/statistics.htm

108, that's like over 1 a year.

Here are a couple of tips, don't swim at dawn or dusk, don't swim near fresh water inlets (rivers, streams, sewer pipes electrical plant water discharge) don't swim with dead fish in your pockets, don't swim near seals.

Have fun and Happy Friday the 13th.

Is that 108 number along the U.S. coasts only?  There were 56 from the Indianapolis in 1945.

Yes it stated along the Pacific Coast of North America, thanks for pointing that out.

Edited to add, I would assume that includes Mexico as well.
