chandy14ski - 2010-08-12 10:37 PM So a single white shark was cited (and beaches closed) about 5 miles from where I am vacationing. I am just getting comfortable in the ocean (Im a freshwater lake guy)- I know the odds are LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG... but I cant help but worry that I look like a seal!

Reassure me that Im not this shark's breakfast plans for tomorrow!

It's probably looking for a mate and just interested in a movie.

In the 20th century there were 108 reported attacks, with September being the month with the most attacks and August & October following close.

http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/statistics.htm

108, that's like over 1 a year.

Here are a couple of tips, don't swim at dawn or dusk, don't swim near fresh water inlets (rivers, streams, sewer pipes electrical plant water discharge) don't swim with dead fish in your pockets, don't swim near seals.

Have fun and Happy Friday the 13th.

Is that 108 number along the U.S. coasts only?  There were 56 from the Indianapolis in 1945.

Yes it stated along the Pacific Coast of North America, thanks for pointing that out.

Edited to add, I would assume that includes Mexico as well.

I like the chart that shows the age range most often attacked.  It appears I am beyond the "tasty" range.  LOL

Are you on Cape Cod by chance?  Lots of shark sightings this year and lots of beach closures.

HP12C_Guy - 2010-08-13 10:37 AM I read that world wide, sharks kill about 10 people per year and people kill about 100 million sharks per year. So if a shark eats you, it's karma. Also, if a shark eats you you have improved the odds for the rest of us by 10%. Thanks!

faded_memories - 2010-08-13 12:23 AM Who exactly has the jurisdiction to write a ticket for a shark?  And what was it charged with?

Chances are it didn't pay the fine (they rarely do), and now has a warrant out, so it wouldn't want to be seen near the beach again.  You'll be fine.  Unless it's personal.

If people ever found out how often they were actually in close proximity with sharks while swimming, the beaches would be empty.  At least here in South Florida.    I see them all the time and respect there space.   Fact is chances are rediculously low and way too low not to enjoy what the coast has to offer.    Now for those on the west coast, I have to admit the great whites are a bit more compelling of a scare than many of the types over here.   Fatalities are very rare among victims on the Southeast.    While the fact of losing a limb to a great white is considered fortunate

I have a deathly fear and disgust of geckoes, so I'm trying to understand. Then again, they're everywhere here, and I don't go hide out in the water to avoid them.

You'll be fine ... breathe, relax, think happy thoughts.

I admit I was rather startled to see a beautifully marked black tan and white triangular fin cruising alongside me on an OWS a few months ago ... and then I was like, hey, pretty fin! It was gone pretty fast ... I think I scared it. I may have had the Labradogs in tow, too, so we were making quite a ruckus.

If you swim in the ocean, the chances are 100% that you've been closer than 5 miles form a shark

Getting attacked by a shark are along the same odds as winning the lottery. Just remember, someone always wins the lottery. Happy swimming!

I can't stop laughing...but I'm not swimming in the ocean!  This makes fear of snapping turtles and snakes in the lakes seem like nothing!

Probably more sightings there than any other place on California coast, that are recorded anyway.

"Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin’, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named “The Battle of Waterloo” and the idea was: shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin’ and hollerin’ and screamin’ and sometimes the shark go away… but sometimes he wouldn’t go away. Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark… he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be living… until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin’ and the hollerin’, they all come in and they… rip you to pieces." - "Quint" Jaws, 1975

Have a good  swim!

Relax -- your odds of being attacked by a shark are lower than getting struck by lightning.

But then again, if you get struck by lightning before tomorrow morning, you might want to rethink that swim...

ARK ARK ARK

You shouldn't swim around seals because some of them are mean and will leave a very nasty bite. Some of them are nice and will leave a very nasty play-bite.

The odds of this happening are far better than a shark bite. There's even a name for a super yucko infection people get after being bitten by seals: Seal Finger.
