Pre-race routine:

We arrived in Strathmore on Saturday. Yes we live probably 50 km away but we decided to stay over as it gave us a closer home base. I woke up at 6 a.m. and had a light snack and some coffee. Transition opened up at 7 so we were there fairly soon after it opened. Set up and waited for the mandatory pre-race meeting. This meeting is helpful if you have never done this race or ever done a tri. After that, I was fortunate to get picked up by my hubby/family - we went back to our hotel and waited to closer to my swim time. It's a pool swim and my start time was 11-ish. Sat in the hotel room hydrating, eating and relaxing. This was great!
Event warmup:

Left the rest of my gear in transition and walked to the pool area - stood in line and waited for my time to swim. The waiting area was *hot* so we all warmed up fast. Bring a bottle of water to drink while you wait (there are garbage cans to toss the bottle in).
Swim
  • 10m 55s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

Adrenaline was high but I felt good about the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Forgot to look at/stop watch after swim so not entirely sure of my time.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No fast mount for me - I just run to the start and fiddle with getting on. Could improve.
What would you do differently?:

Work on jumping on the bike.
Bike
  • 46m 34s
  • 20 kms
  • 25.77 km/hr
Comments:

I need to work more on biking on the road - I don't have a lot of time to devote to this. If I want to get better, that's what I've got to do. Looked at my watch finally when in transition and I think I may have been faster on the bike than in 2008. Road surface actually alternated between smooth and rough.
What would you do differently?:

Not pop the chain but maybe that means a different bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again, I guess I could practice getting out of the shoes before the dismount but it hasn't been a priority.

Comments:

Hot!!! The first hot weather we have had all summer. And I was running at 12:30 p.m. I haven't done a tri for 2 years and I'd forgotten how hard it is on the legs at the start of the run - I think I might've pushed a bit too hard on the bike and I felt it in the first km or so of the run. My kids and hubby met me at the finish line and my kids ran with me across the line. That was great!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I'm glad I pushed as hard as I did on the bike so no regrets.
Post race
Warm down:

Piled stuff in van and drove off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to do more tri's - and I think I am 're-hooked'!!

Event comments:

Great volunteers; they were running a little late but the continuous feed swim definitely improved on previous years where it was 4 in-the-pool, 4-out, begin again.

CRAZY that I did better in the swim and the bike but I am very pleased!!

A 15 second PR from 2008 (where I had a much better run)

Performance: Good
Suit: Zoot 2 piece tri suit
Course: Surprisingly choppy given that it was a pool - but I was in the outside lane. Ladies working at the pool told me the pool was 29 C but I think they had managed to reduce the temperature more than that. Lots of seniors swim there during the week so they keep the temps up. After seeing results, I am thrilled with the swim. This is the fastest I have ever swam this distance - no wonder my heart rate was up!
