Which ones are bad for you long term and bad with reference to potential weight gain?  The products that have sugar in them or the products that say "sugar free" and substitute sugar with alternative sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, neotame, tagatose and sucralos?

I try to stay from things like aspartame and others as much as I can.  Still hard to say if they cause cancer and other issues over long term.  Also things like artificial sweetners they said cause you to consume more of them, since they are a little sweeter.

I try to go organic as much as I can when it comes to things like Yogurt, etc.

This is still an area of much controversy so I don't think anyone here can really tell you definitively which are bad for you.  I've made the choice to use stevia where I can.  I don't even know what acesulfame-K, neotame and tagatose are.  I don't like the taste of saccharine and aspartame is tolerable to me in some applications but not in others.

My approach is to stick with the natural-ish ones (Stevia, Erythritol, Xylitol) and not go overboard on them.  I use a protein powder with Stevia in it, but just 1/2 scoop at a time (not only because of the Stevia, but because of the protein).  Some days I'll sweeten my coffee with Z-sweet (erythritol), other days with a pack of raw sugar.

I'll come out and say I HATE diet sodas.  I'll have carbonated water with a splash of fruit juice if I want something fizzy.  But you'll have to pry the sugarfree gum from my cold, dead hands. Cool

If you still crave sweet things, I think it's fine to have up to 100 calories per day of "discretionary sugar."  If you choose to add sugar free food/drink into the mix, go easy on it.  The side effects tend to show up when you have several servings a day.

Personally, I avoid the sugar-free sweeteners completely.
They give me no satisfaction.
My advice is just use real sugar...just do so in moderation.

I avoid both for the most part.  Neither have any nutritional value so there is no point in consuming them.

But I admit to putting stevia in my coffee and tea.
