Just watched my DH at Lake Stevens and I would really like to do a 70.3 next year. Besides Lake Stevens, what other races in the Northwest should I consider at that distance? I'd love to hear thoughts on some of the different races and your experiences at them. Thanks!Shannon Edited to add: I love Chelan but that bike course looked brutal. Maybe that one in 2012?

It was hot... and the hills were tough but I am a BIG guy. I would consider doing it again due to the only show in town!

Good luck,

In addition to Lake Stevens and Chelan, you have a few to pick from depending on what you are looking for in terms of venue, course, time of year. I've done Boise 70.3 (June) and the Grand Columbian (September). There is also Black Diamond (Sept.) and Plutoniumman (Sept.). There are a few good ones in British Columbia, too. From all that I've read, heard, and experienced Boise is pretty hard to beat. I really enjoyed all the positive energy there. You really felt you are part of something grand and special.

I love Chelan but that bike course looked brutal.

I haven't ridden at Chelan but I'd be surprised if it was a tougher course than Lake Stevens.

Edit: Ocean Shores has olympic and half-iron distance races, if you're looking for less hills.

wow - thanks for the replies. I'd been looking closely at Boise so you migth have sold me on that one!   Thinking about Boise in June, a shorter distance at Chelan in July, and then maybe Lake Stevens in August  (depending on how my body holds up).   You know this lifestyle is addicting when you are already excited about races next year

I have done the Chelan, Lake Stevens and the Ocean Shores events. Out of those three for the 70.3 events it is hard to choose.
I like Ocean Shores because it is flat, you get to run on the beach and it is not to hot. I dont like it because it is windy, aid stations are few, and the water is dark, I am not a swimmer so that bugs me. This year was an odd year for this event so I think it will get better next year.

Chelan, you were there so you know it was a fun event. This hills were tough and it was hot.

Lake Stevens was a blast. Loads of people in the race so you are never alone. Drink stations were great just like Chelan.

The bike is a tough call. If you want flat go with Ocean Shores. A challenge then pick one of the other two. For me they are about the same. Lake Stevens seems easier to me. I think the hills are smaller but you do the two times. Chelan I like because it is hard but you only hit the hills 1 time.

I guess they all have ups and downs. I enjoy all races. If I had to pick just 1 race out of the ones I have done it would be Lake Stevens. Not because it has the Ironman name but because it has the most people. Just fun with all those people, it pushes me a bit and this year might have pushed me to much on my bike but oh well. Good luck to you.

This thread was perfect timing. I'm doing the same math. I think I'm going with the following:

Seattle R&R 1/2 mary: June
Chelanman HIM: July
Lake Stevens: Aug
Black Diamond HIM or Oly depending on how I feel after the others: Sept

Year after I am already debating as well... really considering  IMCdA or, IMAZ, would love to do Alcatraz as well. It's easy to get addicted to this stuff. Thanks for the ideas/info all.

I have to say having ridden Chelan and Lake Steven's.... Chelan is a tougher course.

Don't forget Pacific Crest.  Also a pretty course, but tough as well.  A great weekend though.

Chelanman is still my favorite... Pacific Crest a close second, then Black Diamond.

I have heard that Victoria New Balance is a great 1/2 as well!

I've only done one HIM, Grand Columbian (you can look up my race report for full details)....although I will say the bike was hard and the run was hillier than advertised (they said they are changing the course this year).  I am doing Plutonium Man in September to be my second HIM...hoping to PR by a lot, but you never know!

I've ridden most of Chelan's HIM course and Lake Stevens, but not all in the same year.  I think that most courses have challenging rides, so you just have to consider weather, training, money and location and go for it!  I agree, this sport is ADDICTIVE.  I also notice that every year, I know about 10x more people, so it gets way more social, which is almost my favorite part of it.  Almost.

I've done Troika and Lake Stevens, gotta recommend either one of them because they were both excellent.

Both are well organized and challenging, beautiful scenery and excellent volunteers. The main difference is Lake Stevens is WTC, with the high price tag that goes with, and Troika is not.

Seriously, you can't go wrong with either one of these.
