Subject: Patriot's Half
Hi all
I am moving to TN from UT this fall and was looking for a half to do next year. I ran across the Patriot's Half in Williamsburg area. Sounds like a really scenic fun course and a great weekend getaway for the family. I was just wondering if anyone has any opinions about the race and how long has it been going on.

Thanks.

It's a great race, and a great area.  Tons to do very close by -- Race starts by the Jamestown settlement and only about 5 miles from Colonial Williamsburg.  The course is pretty "easy" mostly flat and rollers, the run was changed to lots of shaded trails last year.  I've never heard any complaints...IF I ever get to doing a half, this would be it! (Doesn't hurt that it's in my backyard and they have race day pickup...setup events does some things really right)

Liking the sound of the run course... shaded that is.  Scheduled to race it this year.  Otherwise my opinion is TBD since I have not done it before.

it used to be this horribly boring and sweltering hot out and back on the colonial parkway, but when the parkway was shut down last year they moved the run to the greensprings trails and the neighborhoods around there.  the trails aren't hard...very flat and stone surfaces...you will be popping in and out of the shaded areas as you bounce out into neighborhoods.  the weather is a gamble in september.

A hurricane cancelled the Half 2 years ago...and turned the sprint and oly the following day into duathlons.  UGH.

I did the Partiot Half as my first last year and LOVED it!!! I'm pretty slow and was very nervous about doing that distance, but the course is very beginner friendly. Was really looking forward to doing much better this year but some GI issues have cut my run down and haven't been able to get the right training in. I'm still planning to do the race but it will be just to get through. A bit dissapointed, to say the least. This was supposed to be my year to get much better. As for Set UP I think that they are the best!!!

Thanks for the info. Wow - hurricanes - I didn't really think about that. All we have to worry about here are the occasional smallish earthquake and some flooding in the lower valley..oh yeah and snow in June. I'm planning on this race..so hopefully the weather will cooperate.

I did the sprint last year, enjoyed it so much I have signed for the half, I'm new to the TRI scene but it definitely is a great entry event, flat bike and run.......so looking forward to the 1/2 and the W/burg area is beautiful.......

The weather is all over the place down there right now... hoping its one of those low 80s days on the 11th.  Excited and both nervous... ready to get it over.  Like where I'm at in my training, almost got hit by a car yesterday running, hurdled the front corner of little blue something er other.  A few more hard days of training then I'm going to tone it down a bit.

Were any of you participants in the clinic that Endorphin did last weekend?  I did the clinic, but I forgot to ask if there were any BT'ers there.

I actually got out to the swim site yesterday and battled 2-3 ft waves in the JAmes. I've never seen it that choppy. Sure hope that the weather is better on Sat. If it's that bad, I may not be able to do the swim. I def not a great swimmer and possibly wouldn't make the cut off time. Pray for little wind!!!  Weather channel say less than 5 mph. Let's hope they are right this time!! I plan to get my packet at 4:30 if anyone plans to be there at the meeting.

I hope not... since I don't have a wetsuit.

Wow, those water conditions sound wild.  I've swam in worse than that, but it would certainly make for more of a challenge.

Will also be on the site Friday as I'm helping set it up.  I think I should have intricacies of transition and other things worked out by the time I'm done helping out Friday.

Per the event page:  ***Water Temp is 79F (as of 11am 9/9/2010)***

So wetsuit legal, but no points if it were to stay the same.

BTW, does anyone know what size bottles they use at the handoffs?  Just trying to work out hydration before I get to mile 15 on the bike course to see what they're handing out.

What time of day were you out there?  The water tends to be calm and low at 7 am, and scary at 5 pm.

they list specific bottle types in the athlete guide.  you could also ask at the race meeting.

Last year they handed out the large deer park water bottles that have a flip top. Add they worked rather well for me. I'd just squeeze them into my aero bottle.

Heed as well in the large Deer Park water bottles?  I've never used those sorts of bottles in my cages, I suppose they stay in cages pretty good?

For anyone interested, the following link gives real time data from a buoy in the James near the race site.  You can see air and water temperature as well as wind and wave data.

Anything to help calm the nerves!

Interesting experience... learned a lot in my first long distance and made some real rookie mistakes that I shouldn't be making.  Hydration on the bike stunk due to a dropped bottle and missing the last bottle hand off.  Halfway through the swim it hit me I hadn't put my bike number on, LOL.  Hit my goal of breaking 5 hours barely @ 4:59, race report when the data is up.  Not bad for my first HIM I suppose.
