Just a full marathon.  It sold out 3 - 4 months ago.  I think there are 40 - 45k runners this year.  I've done it the last few years, but am taking this year off.

It is a great race.  The fan support is unbelievable.  I think last year they estimated over 1.5 million spectators along the course.  It was a party the whole way.

There might still be some charities taking runners.  Would have to fundraise around $500-1k or so before, but alot of them include the race fee.

Check out the website for charity running, might still have a chance.

Did 20 miles this morning at Waterfall Glen (2 laps plus).  Ran negative split on second half and finished feeling very good.  Humidity was about 94% but temp wasn't too bad.  I'm definitely hoping for 40-50 degrees on race day so that I can BQ!

Yea I was seconds away from signing up for Team World Vision about six months ago, but chickened out because I didn't think I could handle the stress of a marathon. Now I am really regretting it. I can't commit to raising that much money in such short time, but you can bet I will be out there next year and will be trying to make it out to hand you all water this year

The volunteer's jackets are fantastic.  I would rather just pass on the race and get to keep them =)

Which BTer here had the HTFU sign about mile 24-25 last year right near the end?

I'm in.  I've been hating the training but it's starting to come together.  I've done 15, 16, 19, and 20 milers so far and now in a 20-12 rotation for a couple of weeks till the taper.  I still am in disbelief that I think I am going to run 26.

I'm only a second timer this time , so my piece of advice is very humble, I can just tell you what works for me
I run/walk (Galloway method), so my training plan incorporates the whole 26 miles as one of the training runs. A lot of people who run only feel that running 26 in training will create too long a recovery, but when you slow down your LR and incorporate walk breaks, there ISN'T a recovery period. I did my first marathon in May (Champaign), and both after the 26 mile training run and the marathon, I was on my feet all day the next day, just a little sore.

So, if you are able to get in a longer than 20 mile run, very important-at a slower pace (to prevent injury), do it. They say the Wall comes at your longest distance covered (we never hit it in Champaign, btw). How long was your longest run before Milwaukee?

My advice to any distance runner is to go out slow no matter how great you feel. After 10 'thons (and one ultra) I can say that on at least half I've thought `Oh I feel great! I can go faster!' only to have to slow way down at 22 or 23. If you plan to do 8-minute miles or 10-minute miles or WHATEVER, start out doing that and sustain it. Don't do the `I'll make up time now so I have some to spare as I near the finish.' At my IM I did a 1:50 split on the first half of the 'thon. The second half took me 2:25 and at 24 I felt like I was dying. A clear indication of going too fast on the first half and then bonking on the second.

I should have clarified.  I understand why I "failed" in MKE (Hope was 4:00.  Ended up 4:12 though hit mile 20 at 2:5x) and already feel better about things.  What I was looking for mainly is course-info.  Hills?  Flat?  What to do at the start in terms of seeding.

Last summer's training was the classic 14-16-18-20-22-24 build.  Felt like azz on the 20, 22, and 24s, and not surprisingly felt that way in the race as well.  Much better on focusing on the plan this summer, which is FIRST and has 5 20 milers and also numerous 18s throughout.  Mildly concerned that the longest is 20 but I'm feeling great through them as opposed to last year.  Our most recent 20 was 2:53 and I was reasonably fresh at the end.   Hoping for a 3:40 but any 3:xx will bring satisfaction.

No hills whatsoever unless you count the bridge going over the river and the bridge at the VERY END as hills. That one does suck. It's like a cruel joke. Anyway no hills but it's very very very crowded so expect some delays at the beginning.

the course is very flat - the only "hill" is the last bridge - where you turn into the finish stretch - its horrible to have this uphill fight just before the finish, but the crowd carries you over it and from there on you can see the finish line.

just lets hope to get spared the heat wave of 2007/8 - last year was very cold - but honestly, it is soo much better for the run.

I am only a second timer at chicago, but my piece of advice is: wear something with your name on it or something that you enjoy (Cubs, White Sox, etc)

The millions of fans will see your name or team and cheer for you and give you extra motivation!

Will they cheer if I wear my Brett Favre Aaron Rodgers jersey?

What is FIRST? Is that a training program?
Good luck in Chicago. I just watched SPIRIT OF THE MARATHON and it makes me sorry I've not done one yet.

FIRST is http://www.furman.edu/first/fmtp.htm

IMHO, it is a great program for those that already have a decent running base, or have stagnated in their running.  I qualify on both fronts.  Incorporates some speed work and tempo stuff at specific paces to get you to your goal marathon time.

SPIRIT OF THE MARATHON is awesome, yes.

I'm in this year and am really looking forward to it.  I've done Honolulu twice and was amazed and frustrated by the 27,000 starters there, so I'm a little concerned by the 45,000 entered for Chicago.  My brother and I are getting together to run this race and its the first race we've run together in 27 years, so I think we're going more for the experience.  We're also running for the American Cancer Society so there's a little added motivation.

Have fun everyone!
