nliedel - 2005-07-19 4:49 PM I swear I almost typed the same thing! Of course you aren't supposed to race pregnant.

My friend trained hard for Danskin last summer, and during the race, she got some abnormal cramps in her abs and legs, and felt serverely lack of energy.  She wasn't in her period.  Went to the doc couple days later and found out she was pregnant!

Gwendal, I hate to say it but I think Nleidel's right..just gut it out.  Like I said I'll be there with you.  My race is a 1/2 IM...if I'm in day 1 or 2 I'll have to stop and change twice even if I double up. I could duck into the cornfields on the bike but I can't think of anywhere to do that on the run so, byebye good transition times.  Maybe the lines at the port-o-potties won't be tooooo long.

OH and at the risk of getting completely BLASTED, most athletic forums have a women's only section.  If certain women only want to hang out there, well it's thier loss.

HOWEVER,  since a lot of the guys here ( and on other forums I use) don't stay off the women's boards it seems pointless!

Maybe here, men will find they are being treated to an education.

Okay, so educate me -  I've heard two women bring up dark chocolate.  Help me out: how would that help?

Possibly overstepping my bounds-

Steve

Besides being a stimulant, and its great taste, the caffeine works on migraines!! I suppose the stimulant aspect gives us a boost on a day or two of feeling something like our insides are being drained out. The first couple of days (for me) are the heaviest and you feel the most wiped out.

Gwendal - Someone here mentioned synching up with someone who is a bit off your schedule. This is a known phenomena and worth a shot! Although the time restraint could be an issue. If you are on the pill and you stop taking it NOW, theres a good chance your cycle will be knocked off kilter, yes? Good luck. It's bound to happen to all of us at some point!! It's like knowing sooner or later you're going to race in the pouring rain or freezing cold or scorching hot day.

Although I agree, I just wanted to mention that "gut it out" regarding heavy bleeding is a particularly unsavory image. ;-)

Hi Gwendal,

Even if you aren't on the pill, you still might be able to use some hormonal manipulation.  I've heard the nurses at the gyno's office discussing getting a hormone shot right before your period to delay its onset.  The women who typically use it find out that they're going to start on their wedding day and want to at least not be on the rag on their wedding day.  It's worth a call to the doc!

Long-term, you may want to consider getting on the pill during tri season just so you can manipulate your period as necessary.  It helps so much with cramping, heavy flows and mental instability.  After trying about 6-7 types as well as the ring and the patch, I've found that Yasmin is the best for me!

Other than that, take premsyn or advil beforehand, stick to simple carbs for energy and keep well hydrated.

Best of luck!

Thanks, those were all good suggestions.

Maybe, but I was serious. Other forums (e.g., Runner's World) have Women Only threads, you guys really do have some issues that you need to discuss without us, and we would definitely prefer it that way. I would have some concerns that it would somewhat split the community, where the ladies would just hang out there. I think a lot of that happens over at Runner's World, there are posters in the Women's threads that you never see in the general population.

Maybe here, men will find they are being treated to an education. Maybe we can provide some insight, understanding and bridge gaps of misled conclusions.  One can say the same for a person who is depressed, should we have a 'depressed only' section? How about a umm...with 'children only'? That way others don't have to be impeded with threads of learning about dealing with kids and triathlons, eh? I think its great that this forum allows people to speak freely AND be exposed to paths of understanding they may not know to travel.

although i would vote for a 'bullies only' just for you bear.

I vote NO on a women's only section. The guys WOULD read it anyway, and I'm sure some of the more entertaining threads wouldn't happen.
