I'm aware of beer potentially decreasing testosterone level but it is the dose quoted I am concerned about. "in studies I have read, one can of beer can lower testosterone by 15-17% for 3 days".

12 oz of beer in a healthy male will be completely metabolized in 1 hour. The doses used in these studies are much higher. I also believe that the negative effects of beer come from the hops as much as the Etoh. Wine may be a better option

I agree, and I'd add that the studies show a much smaller reduction than what the poster said.

"What's your poison?"  = What kind of alcoholic beverage would you like?

I found I'm allergic to the stuff!  It cuases my speech to slur, I loose coordination and fine motor control, my thinking becomes cloudy and stupid things to come out of my mouth.  So I just  avoid the  stuff.  :-)

I drink water and occasionally coffee.  And when I race or go on long training ride, I'll have some Powerade.  That's it.  No consume no other fluid.  No milk, no juice, no booze, nothing....

bryancd - 2010-08-22 5:57 PM I drink, a lot relative to some of you. Never bothers me. I eat an immaculate, organic, whole foods diet, I train A LOT, I get 8+ hours sleep per night without fail, there needs to be something I do "just because" it makes me relax from all the other discipline I place upon myself. I need an hour or two everyday where I can relax with my wife and just not FOCUS so much. I love having a few glasses of wine with her every night, talking about or day. Before an Ironman, a few glasses of wine puts me to sleep early, ready to kill it the next morning. Life is short, sometimes you need to do what makes you happy and I'm 100% ok with that.
on the alcohol side of thigns i 100% agree here.

Yeah...training like a madman and still sleeping 8+ hours is poison...for the competition...

Yes, and dancing is a sin and playing cards are the Devil's instruments.

I feel like I am in the movie "Footloose".

Up on the roof, oh yeah. 100 proof, oh yeah. I'm feelin' fine, oh yeah. Drink cherry wine, oh yeah.

TheEdge - 2010-08-21 10:13 PM I hope no one thinks I was trying to offend, or put down, or question anyone's motives or wants for drinking. I could care less if anyone drinks.  I used to drink myself silly years ago. I just wondered if anyone felt the way I did about their body being sensitive to the effects of alcohol. That is all. Don't read too deep into my question.

I experience the same sort of thing.  I can certainly feel the effects of 1-2 drinks the next morning.  I think it has something to do with not sleeping quite as well.  Doesn't seem to matter if I go to sleep at 9:30 or 11:30, still feels the same.  Oddly enough, since I started training, I crave chocolate milk (and ice cream) and don't really have a desire to have a beer/glass of wine.  I used to have a glass of wine or a beer with dinner almost every night. Who knows....

Regarding the OP, it may not be the alcohol in the beer that is making you feel that way. In fact, IMO, it is most likely not. Could be the hops/gluten/etc that you are sensitive to.
I try to get all my clients (Boot Camp and tri coaching but mostly Boot Camp) to switch from beer to wine, if for no other reason than to stop the bloating so many people experience from gluten. The next time you indulge, try wine instead of beer and see if you feel better the next day.

Well, technically alcohol would be a poison. If you can OD on something and die, there's a good chance it's poisonous.

That said, penicillin is poison too, but that doesn't mean it's bad. You know your body and know how much it can handle.

In all honesty, I'm a genetic mutant who can't process alcohol without getting violently ill, so to me it definitely is poison.

On side note:
My best 5k time ever came off a all night cheap red wine bender and 3 hours of sleep.  I ran with anger that day and have never been able to duplicate it.

Yes it does slow me down, but wine is another of my passions, so I won't let that stop me. I do avoid having a glass of wine (or two) the night before an important race though... otherwise I have pretty much one glass a day.

I often times drink beer as a recovery drink.  Usually one or two and not noticed any issues.  I do drink Select 55 which is basically water.

I don't think having a beer after a workout is going to cause most people any issues.  But alcohol does effect people differently.  I would suggest whatever works for you.

Matter of fact swam 3 miles this evening and having my 2nd beer right now.  I will swim tomorrow morning without any problem.

In my opinion, every small detail affects the final result, including alcohol consumption. Of course, this thing is subjective. To me it hinders more than it helps, especially in psychological way that I have towards sports. For a discipline that includes proper and constant trainings, approving your result and thinking how to resist stressful stages of the battle,  it can often be compromised by minor things.
If I consumed alcohol, it doesn't necessary mean that my next training will be less excited and I will have a weaker result, but this often occurs.

Here and there, I have a beer. If any alcohol, I would recommend consumption of red wine with dinner every now and then.

Feels like putting poison into my body? Sometimes definitely.
