Subject: Post Race Protein Cravings
I have noticed a trend in my post race diet.  Almost after every race, I crave protein for a few weeks.  For example, after my Disney marathon I craved steaks and burgers for nearly 3 weeks.  I did a triathlon 2 days ago, and once again I have the same craving.  I just HAD TO eat a burger (not a fast food burger but restaurant burger) for lunch.  This is strange, because I don't normally eat a lot of steaks/burgers, nor do I ever crave them unless it's after a race.  Does anyone else have these post race cravings too?  Is it because my body is starving for protein??  Right now I feel like I need "real" or "solid" food to fill me up.  In a week or so I won't crave them anymore and will be back to eating burritos.

There's this story about one of the girls I coached for TNT, and how after she ran her first half-marathon, she was craving nothing but "salty meat." We still have fun with that...

For the subject I was going to write "craving salty meat" but opted not to.  I want people to take me seriously on this topic and not twist it into something perverted- yeah right, like that's not going to happen...

OMG! You are my twin! I do not eat that much read meat. I stick with fish and tuna mostly. After races I HAVE to have a huge burger or steak! That continues for a couple of days-week, or longer the longer the race.

I think its because we don't eat enough in the first place. I just listen to my body and if i have to have it I do. It goes away though.

This is too funny...

You're almost gauranteed to crave a burger after the race.  You HAVE TO let me know if you do!

My stomach gets upset during/after races as it is. I don't need a big plate of beans to make the situation worse.

Bring on the salty meat! (I mean hamburgers not tri guys with body markings...yumm...i mean...)

And then there's always the alternative of: Tofurkey, Soysage and a variety of other great meat substitutes.

I would like to say that I haven't craved meat since I started this vegetarian thing...and now all I can think about is a steak. Luckily, tonight I'm having pesto pasta of some sort - hopefully it will dissuade me from McDonalds.

Actually - the worst thing about my Tri this Saturday is the next day: I'm headed off on a mission trip with a bunch of high school guys and gals. Bad food. Bunk Beds. High School Drama. Can't wait!

Actually, it won't be that bad...maybe. I like to say I'm the only person to get a master's degree and then make LESS money working at a church. But I digress.

Oh my- that happened to me.  I ran a 1/2 marathon on a Saturday (which was a week after my first olympic tri), got back home on a Sunday, and then left for a missions trip to India on Monday.  Long flights, foreign food, bad plane food, lots of snacks, hot weather, futon mattress to sleep on, not being able to exercise for 11 days...it wasn't good but was well worth it!!  I hope you have fun on your trip!

One of our BT members posted one time that after her first tri, she threw 10 years of vegetarianism out the window and ate a steak!  So there's obviously something to this!

No way!  I knew I was on to something.  I bet after our bodies go through all that torture they just need protein??  Has to be.  Hmm...interesting.  I am afraid to do an IM- I would probably hold all the employees at Outback hostage until they got me my steak.  It's bad enough after a marathon or olympic tri!

Your body needs protein for muscle breakdown recovery. You should eat protein within 30 minutes of a hard workout/race. Yep, listen to your body and eat what it tells you to. I usually plan for a steak or hamburger a day after a race.

I did a 1/2 IM last weekend and had to get a 20 ounce New Yorker that night. The next day even my wife made Steak Diane and I ate mine and half of hers. I am not sure of the science behind it, but crud is it true in my life.

A craving for red meat may not be so much a need for protein - you can get that from lots of different foods like, beans, dairy, peanut butter, fish, etc. - it could also be a craving for iron or even salt. Red meat is one of the best ways to absorb iron into your system. Alot of women are iron deficient, especially for those who usually don't eat red meat, and this might be an explaination. I don't know, just a thought.

After my first event, I needed steak. The BF said "what would you like to eat for dinner?" I said "I don't care where we go, but I need steak. Sizzler or Morton's, it doesn't matter". He said "How about that italian place we've been hearing about?" NO PASTA, YOU MORON, STEAK! And veal parm just wouldn't work.....

My money would be on the iron, since everyone is craving red meat not protien.

I don't normally eat meat altho I'm not strict...I refuse to offend people I care about (like my grandmother!!) who just don't understand my habits.  STeak completely disgusts me, but curious to see if I'll crave a burger after my race this Sunday.  I don't remember craving one last year, but I still ate meat then and wouldn't have attached much importance to it.    I'll let ya know!

Well actually your muscles need CARBS more than protein to recover faster. From differents studies the ratio goes anywhere from 4:1 to 7:1 carbs to protein

Anyway,  I always crave burgers/steak after races/hard training sessions, however to recover faster it is better to eat some protein with lots of pasta, bread, potatoes. Right after long workouts and races I always have a recovery drink (Endurox R4, Power Bar Recovery) and then I get my HUGE burger with fries!
