I currently use an FSA Gossamer standard double crankset (53/39). Can I simply the swap the chainrings out with a 50-tooth and a 34-tooth to effectively convert it to a compact? From what I've read, they both have the same bolt circle diameter (110mm). I assume I'll have to re-position the front derailleur, as well.

If your crank is truly 110 BCD, you can change the chainrings.

Most standard cranksets have 130 BCD.

Just checked FSA's website, and it looks like you're right. Wishful thinking, I guess.
